The Georgia state Senate on Tuesday passed legislation that would require voters to submit a driver's license number, state identification card number or a photocopy of an approved form of identification in order to vote absentee in the state.
Senate Bill 67 passed the upper chamber in 35-18 vote on Tuesday and now heads to the state House for consideration, The Associated Press reports.
The bill has already been met with opposition from Democrats and voting rights groups who say the legislation would make it difficult for voters who don't have a driver's license or state identification card to vote absentee. According to the AP, absentee ballots are currently tallied using signature verification.
State Sen. Larry Walker, one of the Republicans sponsoring the bill, said the bill would not affect about 97 percent of voters, according to the AP. The remaining percentage of voters, Walker said, could vote in person.
In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, voting rights group Fair Fight Action said the bill would add "needless barriers to voting in Georgia" and accused proponents of the measure of ignoring voters who would be affected by the legislation.
"In Georgia, with more than 7,692,567 registered voters, that means that 230,777 electors may not have the requisite identification and will therefore incur a burden in complying with the law," the group said, while also adding that the "discriminatory policy" shows "Georgia has not moved past the racist motivations for which it was included in preclearance under the Voting Rights Act of 1965."
The bill, which has more than 25 Republican co-sponsors, is one of a number of bills Republicans have filed in the Georgia General Assembly that would directly impact voting, particularly absentee voting, and voter registration in the state.

But will Kemp sign it?
Isn’t that nice that the legislature is passing laws that Stacey Abrams’ group will sue to ignore, and the court or Secretary of State will happily go along with.
And a judge will declare it unconstitutional cuz its racist
The idea that certain races are not as capable of getting ID's or showing up to vote in person as other people is itself a racist statement.
This does not solve the problem (perfected by the DemocRATS) of replacement of Republican voting ballots with ballots contains DemocRAT votes. And THAT IS HOW THEY STOLE THE 2021 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION (ALONG WITH SOME US SENATE ELECTIONS (e.g., Georgia, Michigan and, possibly, Arizona.
Wake me up when this or anything else that seeks to prevent voter fraud is actual law and actively enforced.
Oh and corrupt Kemp who is lodged in the crack of backside Stacey is going to sign that sort of legislation? I’ll place a bet that he won’t sign it.
Too late
They need to pass a law making “Mail in ballots” illegal (even though it technically already was illegal).
When I voted absentee in OK this year, I had to get my ballot notarized.
Last years election format was racist and unfair to lgbt, hispanic and black minority TRUMP VOTERS.
BUT WAIT, it wont matter if the Gov and the SOS can illegally create there own law so it’s not know by the State Legislature till they go home right before the election and neither party will have 2/3 to call a special state legislative meeting to override a fraudulent electiom against the other party’s election win.
One method of fraud cooked into Georgia's automated voting system in 2020 was its "unforeseen" generation of very large numbers of "errors" which required precinct officials to "adjudicate" each rejected ballot - and replace it with a fresh, untraceable replacement ballot while discarding the original printout. Beautiful, ain't it? Without the original ballots, even the most thorough audits will simply recount the fraudulent replacement ballots over and over again.
Once our votes are digitized, whoever controls their tabulation system can massage the data as they wish - just as the system was designed. There is no way to make Georgia's automated voting system foolproof, and there is no need for automation that requires "experts" to examine and verify. That $100 million must be written off and paper ballots should be counted at the precinct level, as reasonably intelligent laymen have done for hundreds of years.
Why pass this, if all of the election ‘cheating’ only resides in Trump’s head?
The proper verb to describe what Kemp did is not “transpire.” It should be “perpetrate.” Kemp is a despicable criminal. GOPee Delenda Est!
Until some Dem judge rules that requiring signature verification is an “unconstitutional” infringement on the right of leftists to vote illegally, amd SCOTUS yawns.
Izz Votah Suppreshis!
/Stacey
