Vietnam has been building up its defenses in the Spratly Islands over the past two years to “ensure it can strike Chinese facilities” in the disputed archipelago, a report by a Washington-based think tank said.
Emplacements for air and coastal defense systems have been installed on most of Vietnam’s bases in the Spratlys, with the most significant upgrades at West Reef and Sin Cowe Island, according to the report released on Friday by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies’ Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative.
It said the recent building work underscored Vietnam’s efforts to make its facilities in the area more resilient against China, and to make sure Chinese bases were within striking range.
Both countries lay claim to the Spratlys in the South China Sea – claims that overlap with those of the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan – and occupy outposts there. Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea and tensions have escalated over its increasing assertiveness in the region, which has become a flashpoint with the United States.

I did not know VN had defenses in the Spratlys but am glad to hear it. They can work with the Quad when the balloon goes up.
Israel armed the Azerbaganis with the right kind of drones that literally decimated and killed most of the Armenian armored corp. It was a massacre that military people around the world duly noted. Would not be suprised if the Vietnamese have obtained a maritime version of those drones and just might be getting positional vectors on Chinese ships from a friendly source with common interests. The Chinese Navy is not invulnerable and some countries are not willing to do the kowtow before the Middle Kingdom.
If you mean the 1979 Border War, that was when the PLA, which was outdated in equipment, and hadn’t fought a major conflict since Korea, was nonetheless able to take and sack a good sized city (Lang Son), kill 100,000 Vietnamese civilians, and destroy a PAVN division (Gold Division) and afterwards, withdraw back across the border without large scale Vietnamese pursuit. Sounds like the Vietnamese got a “very bloody nose” as well.

There may have been an impeachment trial happening in Washington but Joe Biden’s attention was on his family at Camp David in Maryland over the weekend. Lucky for us, an adorable picture has emerged of his time there playing some serious Maria Kart with his granddaughter.
Naomi Biden, one of Biden’s seven grandchildren, shared a picture of them playing on the virtual racecourse on old-school arcade-style booths, facing off in a fierce game of Mario Kart at Camp David. “Secret Service made an exception and let him drive himself!” she captioned the photo. “A little rusty but he still won (barely),” she added.
