When the power wasn’t out the prices were CHEAP. I just signed up for a Griddy and now is the best time

People on Griddy have been saving money for years...poor people shouldn’t be on Griddy (or Griddy shouldn’t even want them as customers).

Then you have to take the bad with the good! (Pass thru “wholesale rates”).

(Or switch to the Kali “stable” commie green rate scheme of ~.30/KWH).

It is just more of the new Amerika whereas no one is responsible for shit. Sign a contract, no big deal whine until you can get out of it.

Believe me, I know. We own/ operate a self storage facility. We have a contract and I would venture to guess only 1 out of 20 read it. Then when it come to applying late fees, moving out, address changes, they act like they were never informed.

Interesting info from the Griddy web site:

As soon as we could see that this storm, coupled with ERCOT’s forecast errors, were going to wreak havoc and result in record-breaking price surges, we knew that many of our members wouldn’t be able to reduce their energy consumption sufficiently … particularly when Texas homes are not built for below-freezing temperatures.

We pushed out an email as quickly as we could, suggesting that our members switch to another provider with a fixed rate. While we value our members, we want what is best for their wallet and family even more, even if that means helping them switch away to our competitors. Their well being is more important than our bottom line.

Unfortunately, it looks like other providers are no longer excepting switches until later in the week. For those that did not switch over, we will still be here for you in any way we can help and continue to send you daily market updates. We also have recommendations of helpful ways to reduce your energy usage: https://www.griddy.com/post/how-to-save-during-a-price-a-spike-winter-edition

While prices continue to remain very high throughout the week, we will not be shutting off power for anyone. If you lose power, it is from a rolling blackout in your area. Elevated pricing is likely to persist into this coming weekend, likely not at the extreme levels of the last 2 and next 2 days, but still pretty unpleasant.

Prices were NEGATIVE yesterday on Griddy. People were getting paid to use power.

More very interesting info from the Griddy web site:

*The wholesale price of electricity changes every five minutes and is billed every 15 minutes. This price is set by the grid operators, ERCOT, and is passed through to you without any markup. The price can go negative (which means you are getting paid to use energy) or as high as the market cap of $9/kWh. It has only ever gone that high 0.05% of the time. Most of the time though, 96% to be exact, it is below 6¢/kWh.

Put the blame where it should be. Square flat in the lap of the Obiteme admin that DENIED Texas from bringing their generators up to higher running rates.

The pos admin is to blame.

Texans it is time to leave this failed experiment before the Effin Yankees and bureaucrats destroy our State. Support #TEXIT and HB1359. Call your reps to co author bill. Let Texans decide whether they still want to boot the oppressors out of Texas.

Texas First Texan Always

And the great thing about Texas's grid not being able to connect to other states is Texas based providers can't sell to states like Commefornia, jacking up the local rates.

“They signed a contract.”

They did, but I wonder about the responsibility of the various regulatory agencies in restraining the market from producing the necessary GW.

Some may not know, but we have several large Gulf Coast refineries shut down as a result of natural gas shortages. ExxonMobil Baytown is down. Beaumont is down. Motiva Port Arthur is down. Marathon Galveston Bay is down. The situation is shocking to be honest.

There are reasonable limitations to such open ended contracts. For example: I'm salaried exempt labor category - expected to put in some extra hours if the situation warrants, without overtime pay. That does not mean I'm worked 24/7/365 and can't even take a lunch break and get no extra payment until I die or quit.

Why not allow credit card companies charge you 30,000% interest compounded every minute like these power company charges are?

The math and probabilities work out.

Let’s say you average 2000 KWHR’s per month and can save 2 cents per KWHR with Griddy. That’s a savings of $480/year. Over a 10 year period that’s a savings of $4800. So for a once every 100 year event, the odds are greatly in your favor. Even if it’s once every 10 year event and you have to eat a $1500 surcharge one month, you are still much further ahead.

Failing to provide power in a life or death situation via poor decision making and policy would appear to be the pinnacle of contractual breaches one could manage.

Couldn’t the state have told the Feds to F off and run at the capacity they needed considering the circumstances, and deal with the consequences later? They’d have full public support behind them, probably judges too. Why did they listen to the Feds. Do the Feds have a master shut off switch?

If I was Abbott and was denied anything from Feds in this situation and could have kept the power running , I would have told the Feds to F off, I’m going full bore anyways. We’ll talk later. Fools.

I was a voice crying in the wilderness when this was being pushed under the guise of REDUCING the electric bills. We have seen some minor issues with this billing when the wind stopped blowing in the summer. I moved to Florida to retire and actually saw a minor rate reduction this year. Hopefully this will result in this being jerked out by the roots.

Fear monger! I just signed up. I really don’t like your opinion that this should be “yanked out by the roots”. Some of us want to use Griddy to save money.

“They signed a contract.”

While true, and while they did make out like bandits in good times (often paying nearly nothing for power), people do elect governments to protect them against themselves...in other words, to be their ‘parent’, in some ways.

We may not like that, but Abbott at least understands that Republicans cannot win elections by looking the other way (or jetting off to Cancun, for that matter), when people do dumb things. He knows that if Republicans are not seen to care about these people, then Democrats will be given a shot at caring about them.

The problem is the people who are allowed to vote, at least in this country (everyone, rather than only people who contribute). Until that changes, no one will stay in power if they try to ignore the ‘takers’.

I think if ERCOT failed in winterization of equipment..resulting in high rates..why should rate payers pay for their errors and misrepresentations?
As for Abbot..you would think ERCOT is supervised by the PUC which is under Abbot. ERCOT members and PUC should be replaced and buck stops with Abbot.
