Dem Rep. Khanna: ‘We Don’t Want’ Small Businesses That Can’t Afford $15 Minimum Wage

Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) declared Sunday that we should not want “low-wage businesses” when pressed on small businesses who would struggle under a federal mandate to pay employees $15 an hour.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025 would cost 1.4 million Americans their jobs over the next four years.

Khanna said, “Abby, it’s absolutely the right time to give working Americans a raise. Let’s look at the facts. Amazon raised their wage to $15 nationally, not regionally. They have more jobs today. It didn’t hurt job creation or business. Target followed. They also did it nationally, more jobs.”

Phillip said, “Large businesses like Amazon and McDonald’s, for example, can and perhaps should pay more, but I’m wondering what is your plan for smaller businesses? How does this, in your view, affect mom and pop businesses who are just struggling to keep their doors open, keep workers on pate roll right now?”

Khanna said, “Well, they should be doing it by paying people low wages. We don’t want low-wage businesses. Most successful small businesses can pay a fair wage. If you look at the minimum wage, it increased with worker productivity until 1968, and that relationship was severed. If workers were actually getting paid for the value they were creating, it would be up to $23. I love small businesses, I’m all for it, but I don’t want small businesses that are underpaying employees. It’s fair for people to be making what they’re producing. I think $15 is very reasonable in this country

I eagerly await the time when Californians regain their balls and fine this woman and make her regret being born. Make it a long regret.

These red dot indians do not value freedom. At best they strive for British colonial style government.

Wonder if this baffoon has any family or relatives with small businesses. Conservatives should DEMAND they pay their employees $23/hr or higher.

That’s a very ignorant statement. Most small businesses can’t afford much in wages because they are also paying for everything else. There is no well connected or deep pocketed board of directors to lobby for discounts.

Khanna is a corporatist / fascist. I can bet without looking she’s received donations from big businesses like Target and Amazon.

Liberals are anti-jobs. They want to ban all jobs worth less than $15/hr.

Economic MORON. Enforced minimum wage destroys many small businesses who employ those willing to take less.. in a NATURAL economic system.

Two groups benefit from minimum wage edicts— 1.)larger companies who want to remove any smaller competitors, who are thus put out of business by the government and 2.) UNIONS— who under FEDERAL labor law- negotiate the UNION wages for whatever union jobs BASED ON THE floor labor per hour figure of ... the Minimum Wage. Minimum wage goes up— automatically UNION wages are linked to the MInimum wage by FEDERAL Law on Labor.

Khanna was born in 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His parents are Indian immigrants to the United States. His father is a chemical engineer who graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the University of Michigan, and his mother is a former substitute school teacher.

Khanna graduated from Council Rock High School, a public school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1994. He received a B.A. in economics with honors from the University of Chicago in 1998, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 2001.

In private practice, Khanna specialized in intellectual property law.

In other words, he's never worked a day in his life.

The reason Amazon has more employees is because the lockdown shuttered small businesses and people shopped online out of necessity.

“Abby, it’s absolutely the right time to give working Americans a raise...”

But is it the government’s role to give the raise? The government isn’t paying for the raise, is it?

This hearkens back to a statement by HRC about her Health care plan. “We are not responsible for under-capitalized businesses”

The whole idea of entry level jobs being mandated to pay upwards of 15 an hour is absurd....job loss via automation and an even worsening economic future with no on the job experience to teach customer handling skills....how do independent trades persons such as myself adjust my hourly/job price?....do I ask 35-40 an hour and get very little work as illegals will do it for 10-12? I see this topic as another divisive constant story to keep us occupied with our blathering and commentary while the bitches and bastards fleece our republic along with the 25-32 million strong employees of fed/state.
