I heard long ago that the issue with Turing wasn’t that he was a homosexual but rather he kept getting busted picking up teen boys. Eventually the cops stopped looking the other way.
The Soviets blackmailed a lot of British people to become spies for them before, during and after WW2. The US case of Burgess & McLean showed how that blackmail techniques was used in the US and the British saw how bad their internal security was towards closet Communists and homosexuals who were being blackmailed or targets of such.
This story is much more complicated than what is in the article.
