General Motors Co. GM 0.79% is betting its future on electric cars. By mid-decade it plans to spend $27 billion on manufacturing 30 electric models and developing driverless cars. By 2035, it expects to have phased out gasoline-engine options completely and to be selling only electric vehicles, a technology that currently generates about 2% of sales and no profit for the company.
Planning for this transformation at the factory level is the responsibility of Gerald Johnson, a GM lifer who took over global manufacturing operations in 2019, and who is spearheading a $2.2 billion gut rehab of a factory in Detroit, recently renamed Factory Zero, to serve as GM’s electric-vehicle hub. Two more conversions of North American factories for production of electric vehicles, or EVs, are in the works.
Mr. Johnson, 58 years old, calls it the most far-reaching strategic shift he has seen in his career at GM, which he began 40 years ago as an intern.
“There has always been incremental change,” he says. “This is transformative.”
GM factories around the world employ more than 100,000 workers. Some plants exist solely to assemble gas-powered engines and transmissions that won’t be needed if the company successfully reaches its 2035 target, portending big changes for both workers and GM’s factory footprint.

Lucky. Good time to get old. I'll turn 52 in 2035.
It will be the same computations as the ObamaCare savings of $2500/yr for average family. Which did not turn out to be the case. My health insurance went way way up.
GM has made numerous poor managerial decisions over the years, but this one takes the cake. If they go all in on this, I don’t expect them to survive (unless the stupid US government bails them out once more).
They are planning to build things that most consumers would prefer not to own. Despite the laws, regulations and promotion by the MSM, don’t see a bright ,profitable future for GM.
I will never willingly buy an “electric” car.
Can hardly wait to see the cost of the cars to the consumer!!
How long before Government Motors is asking for another bailout, for their poor decisions.
Yeah, the volt has been a hot item.
I thought EV’s were a joke until I drove one.
I love my BMWi3. It has a range extender, a generator, with a two gallon tank.
Fast as heck, about 190 horse power. Carbon fiber body. Sunroof, leather.
The thing with EV’s, your always on a “full tank” every morning. After driving it for a few months, I became a believer. The 2021 Volkswagon looks awesome. 40K for an SUV. Put some solar panels on the roof, done buying gas.
I could care less what GM does or does not do.
If they can’t produce enough electricity to heat homes. Adding more electric use only items is STUPID. Do they think the Jetsons are real.
We might not have a choice. The government might make it illegal to own a car that runs on gasoline. Or everyone will just switch to EV and all the "gas" stations will switch to superchargers.
They would be even smarter to build new power plants to go along with all those electric vehicles.
I love my BMW X1 and will never, never buy an EV.
I had purchased solar panel stock about two years ago. If I remember right, It jumped about 800 percent in the last six month.
People get the government they deserve.
If you have ever driven and heard the roar of a Corvette or Shelby GT500 you would never buy a car that just hums.
I have a 2018 Navigator and am 78. Looks like it might be my last car.
