DC? Walk west until you start to smell it, then walk north until you step in it. Bring a wooden stick for cleaning your shoe soles.
Not they way they have it planned out. See above.
Heads I win, tails you lose.
I like the idea of giving all of DC except the actual capital back to the surrounding states i.e. Maryland and Virginia. DC has already corrupted those states anyway so no harm done.
“The biggest obstacle to D.C. statehood is the filibuster...”
It will take a whole lot more than simple majorities in Congress to pull this turkey of an idea off. If the residents of D.C. yearn for Senators and Representative, they can move a few miles away and have both.
Agreed. That would be Maryland, right?
A former men's room in the Capitol, now a multigender one. Room for a card table and another to count incoming tax money. Yellow tape border around it to mark it as a "city."
I see your reference. Assuming that they do not drop the ball on the D.C. Statehood issue, if I were them, it would be # 1 issue right now, even before the COVID-19 package. But that's not what the Democrats are doing right now.
Is that with the carve out forthe Whitehouse and Capital? I don’t think the founders intended that.
The District of Columbia does not even make a decent COUNTY, let alone anything like a “state”. Part of the District was originally in Virginia, but was ceded back to Virginia and made into Arlington County, as the Federal government was never going to grow large enough to ever use all that area.
Suggestion: Carve out a triangle within the District that includes ONLY the grounds of the White House, the Capitol Hill complex, and the Supreme Court building, then cede the rest back to Maryland, which can then be turned into “District County” and subject to the laws of Maryland.
This district is a particularly small area, encompassing
only 68 square miles of land and water.
District Of Columbia Population 2021 of 714,153
Black or African American: 46.31%
White: 41.27%
Other race: 4.98%
Asian: 3.98%
Two or more races: 3.10%
Native American: 0.30%
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.05%
Forgot to add
It would be the 49th most populous ahead of Wyoming and Vermont.
That is the best scenario for everyone. But the Democrats will never agree to that because all they will get is +1 Representative in the House. They want +2 in the Senate.
Why would it "run afoul" of the 23rd if it's shrunk down in size?
There is no mention, anywhere in the Constitution, of a minimum physical size D.C. needs to be and if need be, what remains to become the newly mapped out D.C. could go from 3 to 2 (or even 1) E.V. in the Presidential elections. That 3 E.V. number is fluid...just like the state's E.V.'s are.
Under the terms of its admission, Texas has the right to split itself into 5 states. That should be the response if this happens.
DC was set up as a federal enclave. The smallest states produce thousands of tons of food and have considerable manufacturing. DC does not.
DC is already the most over-represented part of the country. If it is made a state then the farmers of South Dakota who work 14 hour days during part of the year become less represented while those in DC who just eat the food become more overly-represented.
1. It's actually more substantial than that.
2. "What the founders intended" has been decimated, time and time again.
Going against the founders wishes one more time wouldn't stop any of them.
There is already a fenced and armed border.
Demonrats, constitution what is that?
There is already a fenced and armed border.

That is just the Capital Complex which is not
all of the boundary of DC
