The phenomenon of ending contact without explanation is on the rise, not just in the dating world, but throughout the enterprise, as job seekers and employers are now ghosting each other.
Indeed's survey of 500 job seekers and 500 employers revealed that ghosting appeared to be on the rise amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indeed found that since the start of the pandemic (the baseline is after Feb. 1, 2020), 77% of job seekers said they've been ghosted by a prospective employer, and 10% were still ghosted after a verbal job offer was presented to them.

Happens all the time to my son.
He’s 26 and still under employed.
He has an economics degree from Texas A&M and he works at Whole Foods as a cashier.
He has interviews and never heard back.
“and 10% were still ghosted after a verbal job offer was presented to them”
The article cites one example and it wasn’t ghosting!
There is no etiquette or concern for fellow humans in ACTIONS anymore. Just saying you are compassionate replaces doing anything.
Verbal offers mean nothing. Get it in writing.
And even then these agencies will lie and make excuses for stripping benefits (like PTO and paid holidays) and coming in 30% under the verbally stated pay.
Snowflakes to the left of me and morons to the right.
Yeh this happens alot especially with unemployment benefits paying out so well in some states...get a thousand dollars a week to sit on your backside and play video games all day or go get yelled at by a boss...choice seems pretty easy
This happened to me a lot in the 1970s and 1980s when i was seeking jobs. This is nothing new.. Employers don’t want to call you with bad news that you didn’t get the job.
Complete lack of common curtesy especially since it’s easy enough to shoot off an email to someone.
Yeah, that was not unusual at all in my experience. You just grumble a bit and get on with it.
Good grief, we used to write notes to people thanking them for their interest in the company but fill in the blank...the position has been filled, we think you are over/under qualified for the position, etc. and wish them good luck in their job search.
Letting people hang is rude.
The article was written by someone who just wanted desperately to see their name in print.
“Ghosting” is not new. It has existed for as long as man.
Everyone who has ever operated any sort of business where it is necessary to hire help has had the experience of hired help who left work Friday saying they will be there Monday.....only they never show up again.
Or the guy who has mowed your lawn for the last couple of years.....
It is as regular as the rise of the sun in any business that has hourly employees.
So the story is nothing more than the ramblings of someone with nothing to say.
I was going to retire in early 2020. But then we got to work from home, saving me three hours a day and ~$750 a month in commuting costs.
The day we return to the office is the day I retire. I’m done with this nonsense.
I have to confess, though, that my perspective of this life in this creation as a sort of “video game” or hologram has gone on steroids. That is, I see myself as the Bruce Willis character visiting the past in The 12 Monkeys. i.e. I take nothing seriously in this world other than personal relationships because it’s all coming down very soon. And I believe it as strongly as his character did. It speaks to just how seriously I take my tag line.
I really feel for young people today. They are headed for epic bad times. And I’m only 67 so I may experience a bit of it too. But Old people are more psychologically resilient since we don’t see our “future” destroyed. We’ve already reached it.
Doesn’t the Bible say something about hearts or love growing cold as we near the end times?
Maybe it was a crappy and insulting offer.
And FYI - businesses DO THIS ALL THE TIME to potential employees.

I agree. I don’t know that calling it ‘ghosting’ makes it a new phenomenon. Some employers take a LOT of interviews. I was always told that if you don’t get a call back, and you want the job, you should call them. It demonstrates that you are interested as well as being proactive and engaging. It doesn’t mean you will win the job, but it can help.
This is new and due to coronavirus? I think not.
Presumably, that could open them up to liability, in a country without a loser-pays system, by snowflakes.
Ghosting is everywhere.
I sold an item on Facebook Marketplace. Guy called me “Let’s meet tomorrow morning at the Mcdees on such and such road at 9:00. I get there at 8:45 wait until 9:20 and he does not show and call him.. “Oh I don”t want it now””
