I don't do social media but wanted to sign up with YouTube (i.e. Google) to join and chat in a hobby forum I follow. Before it would let me do that, it wanted a phone number to verify my identity. However, I discontinued my landline several years ago as my employer provides my cell phone to be on call and lets me use for personal calls. I'm unwilling to give it to Google though they say they will respect my privacy and won't sell it. Heck, I get enough spam calls as it is, and don't trust them at all.
