DeSantis calls updated CDC guidance a 'disgrace' and blasts Democrats over teachers unions

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took aim at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a fiery speech in which he highlighted his state’s commitment to keeping schools open.

“What the CDC put out, 5:00 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, I wonder why they would do it then, was quite frankly a disgrace. It would require, if you actually follow that, closing 90% of schools in the United States,” DeSantis said. “We are open, we remain open, and we are not turning back.”

The updated CDC guidance features a color-coded system that recommends basing school opening decisions on the extent of community spread in the area.

Districts in the red zone would face the most restrictions, with only elementary schools remaining open while middle and high schools would be forced to close to in-person instruction.

But DeSantis said the updated guidelines go against the available science, instead highlighting Florida’s success with in-person instruction.

“We’ve been open the whole time, since August. We had kids doing camps and athletics and all that over the summer, and we’ve been in-person as much as anybody in the country, and yet, we are 34th out of 50 states and D.C. for COVID-19 cases on a per capita basis for children. Thirty-three states have more cases per capita than Florida children, and many of those don’t have a lot of in-person instruction in school.”

DeSantis slammed Democrats for putting “unions” and “special interests” ahead of the well-being of the nation’s school-aged children.

“It does not require another $100 billion. The school reopening plan that makes the most sense if you want to open schools, open them. Open the door. Let them come in and let them learn,” DeSantis said.

Open the doors AND tell the teachers "You will not be paid for days where you do not physically show up in the classroom".

I think I read that 64% of the schools were open at least some days for in-person learning, before President Trump left office.

Now I see, yesterday, Kamala talking about having half of the schools back open by the end of Biden’s “first 100 days”. And Savannah Guthrie didn’t even ask why the goal they are sharing was achieved before January 20th.

Noting that I regard Gov. DeSantis as a true patriot, as true as you can get with Ivy League institutional indoctrination these days, why is he getting getting upset over constitutionally undefined CDC, likewise for teacher’s unions?

If DeSantis would start reading Free Republic, he would know that the states have never expressly constitutionally given the feds the specific power to dictate either healthcare or educational INTRAstate policy.

But more importantly regarding healthcare where lockdowns are concerned, note the reference to unique state powers to quarantine in the New York v. Miln excerpt below, the second item in the list.

So while a federal medical advisor like the CDC is arguably a good thing for the country to have, it remains that the states have never amended the Constitution to expressly authorize its existence imo.

Regarding intrastate schooling versus teacher unions, the only thing that the states have expressly protected in the Constitution regarding unions is the Union of states.

In fact, President Thomas Jefferson, in a State of the Union address, also Justice Joseph Story, had both indicated that the states would first need to appropriately amend the Constitution before Congress could dictate policy, tax and spend in the name of INTRAstate schooling, something that the states have never done.

In other words, if teacher's union members are the majority of legal voting majority taxpayers in a given community, then that's good for the teachers. School administrators had better listen to what teachers want, simply because they are majority voters. But why have a teacher's union?

Otherwise, if teachers' union members are minority voters then they need to move to a community where legal majority voters better agree with what members of the constitutionally undefined / unprotected teacher's union want.

On the other hand, I empathize with teachers in troubled schools where the informal main responsibility of teachers is to make sure that the students don't put each other in hospital.

Insights welcome.

Teachers’ unions are the real obstacle to reopening schools here in Commiefornia. Even more so than Governor Nuisance.

Amen. Further, PAC, corporate donations from out of state, etc. should be against the law.
