I taught junior high history. I explained to the kids that we’d be spending a lot more time on English history than the history of other nations, not because England was a better nation or had better laws, but because the United States was the historic and political ‘child’ of England. Our laws, politics, and traditions are based on theirs and of course our language is theirs too.

It doesn’t matter if a kid’s ancestors came from Africa or China. We don’t follow African or Chinese laws and customs here. So I guess I was and still am guilty of ‘Eurocentrism’

I use that same explanation. The truth is what it is- our language, culture, forms of government, are products of Western Europe. I would and do say the US is the penultimate product of the Enlightenment.
