US infectious disease expert cites Israeli data in saying there is growing proof of inoculation’s ability to fight off illness in individuals as well as halt the pandemic at large
At a press briefing Wednesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the most senior US government expert on the coronavirus, cited Israel’s inoculation campaign as proof of the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines while also noting its highly efficient vaccination drive.
“When you look at the [number of] vaccinations per 100 people… Israel is way up there with 78 doses per 100 people, compared to the United States, which has 16.7 doses per 100 people,” Fauci told the media via video conference. “So we have been hearing and seeing in the press that Israel has a remarkable diminution in cases associated with the efficiency of their vaccine.” Fauci explained that the Israeli inoculation drive may show how vaccines can have a societal effect in reducing the impact of COVID-19.
He said the data shows that the vaccines both protect individuals and have “very important implications from a public health standpoint, for interfering and diminishing the dynamics of the outbreak.”
A massive study by Israel’s largest health provider Clalit found that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 94 percent effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19, and 92% effective in averting serious cases of the disease.
Another study Wednesday by the Maccabi health maintenance organization showed vaccine effectiveness at 95 percent, the exact rate anticipated by Pfizer in its clinical trials.
Maccabi also said that of 602,000 vaccinated individuals, only 608 have been infected, and none have died.
Both studies looked at data for those considered fully vaccinated, which is at least a week after the second dose of the vaccine.
Obviously a different situation in the context of size, Israel would be the forth largest metropolitan area in the US. Still it would be nice to read about some counties/states showing success.
It took a year, but Fauchi FINALLY got something right.

Sorry, but at this point I don’t believe Israel’s or any other government’s statistics on China flu.
I would suggest the actual reason for the drop in cases is because the change in the testing thresholds and developing herd immunity.

I suspect that what they’re saying is that you can still have the virus at a very low level, and maybe even spread it. But it’s also very likely you won’t even know it, hence it won’t get reported. What they’re seeing in Israel for the relatively few that get the virus after fully vaccinated is that they only get mild cases.
No, what they're saying (which is really just what the regulators are telling them they have to say) is that what the clinical trials performed so far have tested is whether the vaccines are safe (they are) and effective at preventing serious illness (they are). No vaccine can prevent virions from entering your body. You'll have some enter your body whenever you're exposed. The question is whether the immunity imparted by the vaccines wipes out those virions before they can lead to an infection significant enough to enable transmission to others. This is called sterilizing immunity (and has nothing to do with your ability to reproduce).
Sterilizing immunity is largely a function of the amount of neutralizing antibodies present. As the two authorized vaccines in the US produce far more neutralizing antibodies than a mild COVID-19 infection, all indications are that the vaccines prevent you from spreading SARS-CoV-2 if you're later exposed. However, that hasn't yet been confirmed in testing. So no one is allowed to make that claim.

The case drop in Israel is the same as the one here: it's the end of the bell curve of the current wave stemming from the holidays. However, I think what you'll see in Israel is that there won't be any further waves. They're vaccinating so quickly, that when the next wave would start, the virus won't have any hosts left to spread to. I think Israel is today where we'll be at around the start of July: cases will happen, but not in huge jumps, and they'll slowly dwindle towards zero.
That is how I see the data as well. As you say, it is the next round of infections that will show how effective the vaccine is. Logically that cannot be argued at this time.
