Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die: but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome. - Winston Churchill

The rote-learning in the madrasas and the Imam Hatip schools has leached into the regular state schools, affecting their pedagogy. More memorization, and less critical thought, takes its toll on the talented; they have to endure it. But by the time they are of university age, more young Turks are seeking to study, and then to stay, abroad. This brain drain constitutes a great loss, both economic and cultural, to the country Recep Tayyip Erdogan now controls, and is damaging in every possible way. Well, maybe not every possible way, it kind of depends on what you value.
Education in madrassas makes a better Muslim and as a consequence a more loyal soldier to Erdogan.
Erdogan’s ambition is to unite the nations of Islam under his leadership.
To do that he will need a loyal and dedicated army. Thus his growing network of Islamic indoctrination centers.

The Imam-Hatip schools kind of sound like our universities churning out crop after crop of indoctrinated teachers.
