Q: Do you think plant-based and lab-grown meats could be the full solution to the protein problem globally, even in poor nations? Or do you think it’s going to be some fraction because of the things you’re talking about, the cultural love of a hamburger and the way livestock is so central to economies around the world?
A: For Africa and other poor countries, we’ll have to use animal genetics to dramatically raise the amount of beef per emissions for them. Weirdly, the US livestock, because they’re so productive, the emissions per pound of beef are dramatically less than emissions per pound in Africa. And as part of the [Bill and Melinda Gates] Foundation’s work, we’re taking the benefit of the African livestock, which means they can survive in heat, and crossing in the monstrous productivity both on the meat side and the milk side of the elite US beef lines.
So no, I don’t think the poorest 80 countries will be eating synthetic meat. I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time. Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand.
So for meat in the middle-income-and-above countries, I do think it’s possible. But it’s one of those ones where, wow, you have to track it every year and see, and the politics [are challenging]. There are all these bills that say it’s got to be called, basically, lab garbage to be sold. They don’t want us to use the beef label.

A: [To offset] my own emissions, I’ve bought clean aviation fuel.

True. I’ve worked with some very bright, productive and creative people who didn’t have degrees so I appreciate your point. However, most of those people I knew didn’t run around trying to tell everyone else how to live. Perhaps a few more years of serious study might have made this intellectually arrogant know-it-all a little less dogmatic and supercilious.
Yes, I'm yelling.
>>It’s OK for him to have a 60,000 sq ft home, because he buys carbon offsets! If global warming is worth any sacrifice, why doesn’t he set an example by living in an average-sized home and use the money he saves to buy even more carbon offsets?
Not to mention his fleet of private jets...
Who’s pocket do these offsets go into? Al Gore? What is done with the money? So the rich can afford old energy but the middle class and lower classes cannot sounds fair /sarcasm
because cows is where cultured beef comes from...
Do they go to some kind of finishing school ?
Who made Gates King?
He got lucky because IBM allowed him pursue the software. He’s a one hit wonder but somehow believes he’s all knowing.
Keyboard down, pc type new feature for me.
So will Bill and Melinda!
Gates seems to blather publicly more than Soros though.
He obviously has a God complex.
He didn’t invent MS-DOS or Windows.
Now he’s an expert in viruses and vaccines.
Better yet - now he knows best about what we all should eat.
Evil narcissist.
Did we miss something? Was Bill Gates elected world President? OR is he China’s WORLD ambassador?
According to PETA, the world’s cattle alone consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people—more than the entire human population on Earth. Okay, do we just kill them when we switch or just stop feeding them so they will die in pain because they are still going to need to eat the same to stay alive? And without killing them they will be creating more cows that will consume more food. Same ol’ PETA. If it wasn’t for them and their idiocy I wouldn’t get my daily laugh.
Cultured Beef is created by painlessly harvesting muscle cells from a living cow. Scientists then feed and nurture the cells so they multiply to create muscle tissue, which is the main component of the meat we eat. It is biologically exactly the same as the meat tissue that comes from a cow. So, in other words, we are paying people probably exuberant prices to do what God had started by letting the cows do it themselves for free.
And in time as soon as someone drops the vial that has the cells in it, we will make another species extinct and have no meat at all or turn to squirrels. Don’t think it will happen. See the news about the idiot that left the vaccine vials out for no apparent reason. We have indicated our failure in this direction long ago. Kind of like the buffalo in the northern US.

You are probably right. I’ll bet their tofu bill is pretty low.
Tired of this little creep.
Tired of his ‘god complex’ too.
Hopefully the ‘blue screen of death’ catches up with him sooner rather than later...
I bet Billy doesn’t eat synthetic beef.
I think Gates is not playing with full bits of information in his brain. //Does not compute!//Does not compute!//Does not compute!
So, he’s saying that the places that need to do it least should do it entirely, and the places that need to do it most shouldn’t be expected to do it.
This is the way most Climate Change stuff goes. In doing so, it tends to move production out of the US to places where the work is less efficient and produces more CO2, have a net increase in CO2 production.
But then, the real point is moving the production out of the US.

Being woke and pushing environmental despotism on the lower classes is how billionaires keep the pitchforks from coming for them at their 66ksf mansions.
