Report: Mark Zuckerberg Said Facebook Has to ‘Inflict Pain’ on Apple in Privacy War
Breitbart ^ | 13 Feb 2021 | LUCAS NOLAN

A recent report alleges that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told staff that Facebook needs to “inflict pain” on Apple in the ongoing privacy dispute between the two Silicon Valley giants.

Breitbart News has reported extensively on the latest tech giant battle, with Facebook and Apple warring over upcoming Apple’s privacy features. Facebook is reportedly planning to take Apple to court over allegations of antitrust relating to Apple’s iOS 14 privacy features.

Facebook has been working with outside legal counsel to prepare an  antitrust lawsuit against Apple that claims the iPhone manufacturer “abused its power in the smartphone market by forcing app developers to abide by App Store rules that Apple’s own apps don’t have to follow.”

Facebook’s lawsuit is likely to focus on the changes Apple introduced in iOS 14 which include the App Tracking Transparency feature, which will launch within the next few months and require users to permit apps to track their data.

Now MacRumors reports that in 2018 in the midst of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked how he would lead Apple if the company found itself in a similar situation. Cook replied that Apple would never be in such a situation thanks to its differing stance on privacy and user data.

Zuckerberg responded to Cook’s comments in an interview calling them “extremely glib” and “not at all aligned with the truth.” Zuckerberg was allegedly outraged by Cook’s comments and his influence on Facebook’s reputation and instructed his internal aides and team members that Facebook needs to “inflict pain” on Apple, according to sources who spoke anonymously to the Wall Street Journal.

What a sham. They are all colluding to increase their power and silence any opposition.

Facebook and Twitter have done more damage to western civilization than Muhammed could have dreamed of.

Zuckerberg is stunningly unimpressive in fighting what is inevitable rather than turning it all to his advantage.

Cook is in the right but has made several big unforced errors that have put Apple’s position at considerable risk.

Open banking and very sophisticated digital identification methods together are ascendant around the world and portend a huge privacy pendulum swing sooner than any leading pundit is projecting.

If Zuckerberg were smarter, he would realize that restricting the flow of any valuable resource makes it scarcer and as such benefits those who already hold this resource in reserve. Facebook is in the driver’s seat around the world in terms of helping people structurer their digital identities. In fact, this is the essence of Facebook!

But he is such a risible, pugilistic character that he is headed for a big fall. I cannot wait!

Two companies on the same team arguing about who gets to spy the most on their customers.

Fake collusion to look like conflict. But if it is possible to stir their muddy crapfight up— hope it is successful, and diminishes both.

FussBook and Twit-Tor .. scourges on mankind .. no argument here.

They mine and sell your data in lieu of providing you with certain services for ‘free’. Like webs spun by spiders, they ensnare and entangle you and then censor you if you reach out for assistance.

Having been around SillyCon Valley for nigh 40 years,, man, what a ride and then social media robber barons showed up and made the game of life a truly warped one.

I have to admit, watching them turn on each other in their fight over power, is very entertaining.

Apple “abused its power in the smartphone market by forcing app developers to abide by App Store rules that Apple’s own apps don’t have to follow.”

This coming from Facebook who abuses its position in the public square by forcing Conservatives on Facebook to abide by Facebook standards and rules on content that Facebook and Liberals on Facebook don’t have to follow. That’s rich.

Why don’t I own my identity and be paid for them to use it?

Hmmm...
Sounds like Apple is doing something “good”?

Does that affect the iPad that I got for my 87th birthday last November?

So, I won’t have to resuscitate my 1986 DOS machines?

Does a chicken have lips?

Zuckerburg and Cook seem to be the heads of new La Cosa Nostra families. They should be treated as such. Anyone for opening up Alcatraz to lower transportation costs for the Federal Bureau of Prisons?

Hopefully they'll "fight" to the death and totally destroy each other.

You may be right. But, I have long thought that Facebook's biggest liability is that they don't sell anything physical and are wholly dependent upon users and the data they can mine from them. One thing that has become clear over the last 20-years of social media is that users can be very fickle, and fleeting, just ask the folks over at MySpace.

Granted, Facebook has cornered the market in a way MySpace didn't even approach. But still, they have no ecosystem - as both Google and Apple have - that creates incentives to customers to stay loyal.

Also, while internationally prodigious, Facebook doesn't enjoy the same kind of global domination that Apple and Google enjoy. There are big population groups that use Apple and Google but don't have much use for Facebook.

But I agree with your larger point: Zuckerburg is missing an opportunity here. He's being remarkably short-sighted.

You are correct. Apple makes things while farcebook is one bad PR incident away from financial ruin.
