Opinion: What Will Happen With Automaker Tesla in China?

Commentary

On Feb. 8, the Chinese state-run media Xinhua reported that Tesla, the U.S. automaker, was summoned by five government departments including the General Administration of Market Supervision, to discuss consumers’ complaints about quality issues such as abnormal acceleration, battery fires, and remote vehicle upgrades. On Feb. 9, Xinhua issued three commentaries on the incident, headlined: “Tesla responded to being interviewed by five departments: it will strictly abide by Chinese laws and regulations,” “What’s the warning behind Tesla being questioned,” and “Tesla, there’s no special treatment when faced with quality issues.”

Tesla was suddenly pushed to the forefront of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) propaganda. It should be directly related to the current US-China relationship. Tesla is becoming a new bargaining chip for the CCP against the United States. It should serve a resounding warning to foreign companies operating in China. It’s a wake-up call: to gain access to the Chinese market, foreign companies may have to pay a price far beyond their imagination.

The responsibility falls on Tesla for products to be recalled and improved when there’s a quality issue. But Tesla’s response, promising to “strictly abide by Chinese laws and regulations,” is strange.

Tesla’s response is more like protecting itself in advance. Perhaps the executives at Tesla China have already sensed trouble. This is not just a product quality issue. The CCP is likely trying to make an example of Tesla. To avoid being accused of illegality, Tesla hastened to make a declaration. This is perhaps Tesla’s grievances in disguise.

Strictly speaking of quality issues, Tesla should be considered a rookie in the auto industry. Quality issues are not surprising. The world’s major auto manufacturers have experienced many similar problems before. Even so, with its...

I predict they’ll go in, spend millions or trillions, get all set up and then get formally or informally appropriated by the Chinese government.

Isn’t there a chip shortage going on? With Tesla’s all electronic and electrical vehicular units, that would be a big whoopie do to ride an ATV through!

And I’ve done and it doesn’t hurt then but you feel it around midnight and say, hey that was fun but WOW do I need a chiropractor.

Short story. ALL, and I do mean ALL of Tesla’s intellectual property will be stolen, the CCP will build factories using Tesla’s technology, undercut Tesla’s prices, drive Tesla out of business, and then buy the existing Tesla factory for pennies on the dollar, and restart them to further undermine the prices of all electric vehicles everywhere on earth.

Other that that, “partnering” with China is a good move...

“battery fires”

Doesn’t Tesla buy its batteries from another company?

If so, the Chinese government needs to talk to the battery maker.

China will steal the technology. Probably already have.

Already did, read up on Xpeng motors. They not only copied Tesla models, to the point where interior and controls function, but stole the proprietary self-driving code and database. Tesla sued, and got them to stop using the self-driving code ripped off from Tesla, but China is protecting Xpeng from further restriction. Xpeng is now exporting cars to Europe in an attempt to undercut Tesla.

Yes. In China, the Tesla batteries are different from the U.S. version, and are sourced from Chinese companies. Lower quality and cost, and lower range.

1) Any proprietary IP is stolen.

2) The CCP fines the company with a wink wink..after you grease our palms we’ll let you go.

3) Tesla’s Chinese competitor steals the market share with said IP and help from the CCP to undercut the price.

Bill Casey (Reagan’s CIA director) setup the Soviets in the 80’s. We knew they were stealing our tech like crazy. So when they had targeted process controllers for their largest oil processing center, we sabotaged them. Months later that center exploded when the those controllers went crazy, knocking out critical source of hard currency for them.

If Tesla was smart they would have setup the CHICOM’s in the same way, honey trapping them with buggy code, so the CHICOM company would spend months and months and months trying to figure out all types of weird problems.

“consumers’ complaints about quality issues...”

Everyone raves about the quality of Chinese products. Ask the owners of the Oakland Bay Bridge.

That wouldn’t help sell buggy Tesla vehicles in China. They’ve put themselves in a trap, I think.

No, they use the good code in their own cars but leave the buggy code out where it would be ripped off.
