Nancy Pelosi has slammed Andrew Cuomo's claim that COVID aid is short of the $15billion needed and said the federal package is worth $70bn - on the same day the governor was exposed for hiding the true nursing home death toll.
The House Speaker sent a letter to congressional Democrats touting the settlement, which would far exceed the under-fire governor's demands, as she strongly rejected his repeated claims the state was being short-changed in a rare rebuke from a close ally.
The slap down is a fresh blow to Cuomo as he struggles to salvage his administration from a growing scandal that has seen calls for him to be prosecuted for what former New York governor George Pataki called 'one of the worst' cover-ups he had seen.

This is what is in the Covid package...one big fat 50 billion payout for NYS which Cuomo and his Dem legislature have driven into the ground.
Cuomo knows this Fed.gov printed-money windfall is the opportunity of a lifetime to pay off every political crony, cover every program deficit, bail-out every government pension fund - so why not reach for the sky?

You are right about everything but the pension fund.
NYS retirement system is separate from the budget, and in fact the State can not touch it, by constitution. Oh but they wish they could. It contains billions of invested funds.
Actually, the NYS retirement system is not in trouble. (Precisely because the politicians can’t touch it)
But unions can demand it be topped-up?

No, the unions can not demand it “be topped up”. Besides, it currently has over 240 BILLION dollars in it. It is in no need of “topping up”.

NY is one royally screwed up state. But it is not in the same boat as states that rely on tax revenues to pay pensions.
