Sharon Smith has to plunge her toilet to get it to flush. On rainy days, wastewater spills into her yard from nearby drainage ditches. Twice in the last year her house has flooded, leaving behind the sickening smell of sewage, she said.
Her carpets are ruined, the floorboards are buckling, the bathroom wall is pulling away from the tub, she said. In the laundry room, the worst-hit part of the house, the smell of mold lingers. “I want to move, because this flooding is ridiculous,” said Smith, 59.
For decades, residents of Centreville, a nearly all-Black town of 5,000 in southern Illinois, just a 12-minute drive from downtown East St Louis, have been dealing with persistent flooding and sewage overflows. The smell of it is in the air all over town after a rain, and bits of soggy toilet paper and slicks of human waste cling to the grass in neighborhoods where children used to play on warm days, locals said. Kids don’t play outside any more. Gardens don’t grow.
Like Smith, other locals say their water tastes odd and refuse to drink from their taps, relying on donated shipments of bottled water. They worry about the long-term health effects of living under such conditions, and they say that for years elected officials and local utility companies inadequately addressed their cries for help.

Only read the title. My reaction is WOW!
Why do you think villages live in huts in Africa? Burn ‘em down, move to a clean area, and build a new hut.
When government policies and programs actively encourage and reward ($$$$$$$$) irresponsible behavior, why are we surprised when that is exactly what we get? This is another example of why today’s liberalism is a mental disease. They cannot see or understand that which is obvious and which has harmful effects on society at large. These types of people have no business whatsoever in positions of authority or leadership.
So there are apparently mechanical sewage problems, and drainage problems. If only white people lived there, the mechanism of the sewage system would work properly. The drainage system would perform perfectly if only whites were there. The sewage and drainage systems are conscious, and misbehave because black people live there???
Not surprising
The majority of them do not know how to fix and maintain things, basic things like house repairs, or recognizing the importance of routine maintenance, even like changing oil in cars or tools.
The smaller portion that do understand these things, do not live in places like this.
But wait, they don't tell you that ALL the officials are black, too.
Clearly Whiteys fault.
Maintaining and repair and routine overhauls, replacements of old items still working, are not things the majority of black folks place high importnace on.
How is this statement relevant? Just casting racial aspersions? These are Americans living in America!
Gardens don’t grow?? Seriously?
My take on it was not that, but rather, white people would not have let the system break down like this, it would have been maintained and repaired.
All Whites are racist.
Fix it yourself.
So they are saying that white people could fix it? I thought they were strong black women and diversity was our strength and all that.
There are two ways to interpret that title.
Little by little ... The entire world.
You’re an idiot. It’s a dump because of blacks.
The blacks living there elected other retarded blacks.
Smart blacks moved away from these retarded blacks.
NOT.
That's why the situation stinks. These blacks voted in black officials who don't fix the problems. Same situation as Rhodesia. Chase out the whites who fix things, then blame things on whites when the blacks don't fix anything. It's their problem, they just don't want to take ownership and fix things.
