Exclusive: Dozens of former Republican officials in talks to form anti-Trump third party

(Reuters) - Dozens of former Republican officials, who view the party as unwilling to stand up to former President Donald Trump and his attempts to undermine U.S. democracy, are in talks to form a center-right breakaway party, four people involved in the discussions told Reuters.

The early stage discussions include former elected Republicans, former officials in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Trump, ex-Republican ambassadors and Republican strategists, the people involved say.

More than 120 of them held a Zoom call last Friday to discuss the breakaway group, which would run on a platform of “principled conservatism,” including adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law - ideas those involved say have been trashed by Trump.

The plan would be to run candidates in some races but also to endorse center-right candidates in others, be they Republicans, independents or Democrats, the people say.

Evan McMullin, who was chief policy director for the House Republican Conference and ran as an independent in the 2016 presidential election, told Reuters that he co-hosted the Zoom call with former officials concerned about Trump’s grip on Republicans and the nativist turn the party has taken.

Three other people confirmed to Reuters the call and the discussions for a potential splinter party, but asked not to be identified.

Among the call participants were John Mitnick, general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security under Trump; former Republican congressman Charlie Dent; Elizabeth Neumann, deputy chief of staff in the Homeland Security Department under Trump; and Miles Taylor, another former Trump homeland security official.

Asked about the discussions for a third party, Jason Miller, a Trump spokesman, said: “These losers left the Republican Party when they voted for Joe Biden.”

If they mean what they say they should go join the Constitution Party. But then they really are just posing and hoping for financial backing from some wealthy misfit..

Their “principles” are sending our kids to die in wars for their personal profit. Scum.

This bunch are only looking out for their 'principal'. They cannot earn a honest wage... They literally are functioning slave masters. Any time I read/hear the words 'principled conservative', I hear 'compassionate conservative'... People are their buy and sell commodities.

Patriot Party, pray bring it.

I see tens of millions of Republicans AND DEMOCRATS migrating to the new party immediately when a new viable party is assembled.

After witnessing the Republicans backstab Trump before and after January 6, I can’t stand to see the word ‘Republican’ for more than 5 minutes. There is nothing that can make me look at them again as worthy of my trust.

Oh there is Hawley, and a few others but their funding networks? Forget about it, not happening with me and I know countless others feel the same way. So this means McConnell bites it and our favorites like Hawley can find a better home in a new party with glowing prospects.

There are several members in the House like Jordan, Nunes, Gaetz, Gohmert that could do the country a lot of good by joining a new robust honest party. Tens of millions of others would donate the maximum possible to their efforts.

It will take a shift in money direction. Right now the Republicans have their Swamp fund raising networks crashing because people can’t stand them.

Eagle of Liberty ===> ***It’s an opportune time to start up new funding networks that will build the new party.***

Yup. It’s the grifting squish consultants from the past two decades, with a smattering of the Log Cabin “Republicans” who were never more than a Trojan horse infiltration.

Send the lot of them packing.

These principled conservatives have been around forever.
They never accomplish anything, but they’ll keep their act going as long it fattens a bank account.

The Constitution is a document that every politician in American history, claims to cherish. The Constitution has made a lot of lawyers and judges wealthy, but do most people really give a rip about it. Probably not.

“The rule of law” is a buzz word like “obstruction of justice,” which can mean almost anything to anybody.

The term “rule of law” reminds me of a phrase I despise: We are nation of laws.

Nope, we are a nation of people. Whether we have an expensive and corrupt legal system or not, doesn’t change that fact.

They are going to have to do a lot of cleaning up after their massive wet dream of alienating Trump supporters.

I don’t believe 74 million Americans voted for President Trump.

Between the Dominion voting machines that counted 1.75 votes for Biden and .75 for Trump because the machines were rigged, and other votes that were switched from Trump to Biden altogether, it wouldn’t surprise me if President Trump received 85 million votes or more.
