Parents of schoolchildren learning from home shouldn’t necessarily count on reclaiming the dining room table any time soon.
After seeing two academic years thrown off course by the pandemic, school leaders around the country are planning for the possibility of more distance learning next fall at the start of yet another school year.
“We have no illusions that COVID will be eradicated by the time the start of the school year comes up,” said William “Chip” Sudderth III, a spokesperson for Durham, North Carolina schools, whose students have been out of school buildings since March.

It already is comparable to the flu for HS and college age kids.
Well if they want virtual school I say they get virtual pay.
Union workers do not believe in science...they believe in not much of anything. Sad for our children.
I have no illusions that the virus will be eradicated ever.
It will mutate and circle the globe forever.
Did we “eradicate” the flu? colds? pneumonia? AIDS? SARS? MERS? Rabies? Herpes?...
That’s good. A full time mama can help with the lessons and be a tutor. One teacher can go online and teach one grade to the whole country. They’ll be happier just like a dog that belongs to a homeless person. They get more time and attention.
I think parents becoming aware of how crappy schools are is the only good thing to come from covid.
Smaller groups of homeschooled kids could be a way to have better educated, and more diverse intellectually, people.
Eradicated?!! Now it has to be eradicated?!! It will never be eradicated. Just don’t get run down, eat healthy, get plenty of sleep and if you come down with it, get a prescription for HCQ and zinc or another effective medication. Has strep throat been eradicated? No, we live with it and if we come down with it, we get a prescription.
there will be a massive class action lawsuit on behave of all the poor children because they didn’t really get an education, you know, because, their parents work(right) or are sick(right) or something....billions....it’ll be billions....and the rest of us will just sit here and pay....
AP is crap....is noone talking about how whole states (i.e. Iowa)are no longer wearing masks? Where are the truth seekers?
Does anyone else ever wonder, why we have upended society, over a virus that the vast majority of us will survive, if we do get the virus?
Anyone else wonder that actions taken are overkill for a virus which while serious, is not the return of smallpox or the bubonic plague from. Medieval Europe?
Anyone else wonder if all the collateral damage from these lockdowns and resrictions,, will be worse than the damage to health caused by the virus?
Anyine else ever wonder about these matters?
They are expert in retirement math, they can tell you the date and hour they will retire and the monthly benefit to the penny.
Never let a good manufactured crisis go to waste
There’s a reason it’s called remote learning. The chances of any learning are remote.
Nothing cracks me up more than the so-called ‘conservatives’ here bitching about their kids not being permitted inside government indoctrination centers.
And then we bitch as to what’s become of recent generations.
It’s HYSTERICAL!
And why is this funny ?
So what on earth is the problem in Durham?
Oh, the fear porn has worked wonders. I’ve seen neighbors complain online about starting back to in school learning... “People are dying!!!”
I’ve never been more ashamed of fellow Americans.
This is not good. This: “A full time mama can help with the lessons and be a tutor.” is a scenario that doesn’t really exist. Most mothers in the US now are single, and even if married, are working either outside the home or inside the home. Most mothers can’t teach Calculus or Physics either.
Remote learning is soul deadening, and millions of kids are failing, alone in their rooms in front of screen looking at black squares. Ds and Fs in middle schools in my (wealthy) area have risen 120%. Conversely, cheating is rampant. Kids are isolated—no sports, no drama, no music, no friends in person.
This is the biggest public health disaster in our nation’s history, perhaps, as it relates to education.
I think I read that Iowa dropped the statewide mask mandate, but many cities and counties (and school districts) within Iowa can and do continue to enforce a mask mandate.
