Over 60 progressive groups urge Schumer to nix filibuster

More than 60 progressive groups signed a letter that was sent to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) urging him to get rid of the filibuster in the Senate.

The letter is calling for the filibuster to be removed after Democrats won the House, Senate and presidency for the first time since 2011.

“The results of this election have unlocked the door to change, but another clear obstacle remains: the rules of the United States Senate that allow a partisan minority to block legislation and will prevent the Senate from governing and delivering on the promises they made to voters if they are left in place,” the letter states.

The letter claims the filibuster has been “abused” in recent years and that it has become a “weapon of pure partisan gridlock” and does not contribute to bipartisanship.

The letter highlighted other Senate changes that have been made in recent years, including the filibuster being removed by Republicans for Supreme Court nominations.

“The Republican majority also made use of the budget reconciliation process, first used in 1980, to pass their tax bill with a simple majority. And most recently, they changed the so-called ‘McConnell rule’ to advance President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee just weeks before an election after refusing to advance President Obama’s nominee during the final year of his term,” the letter states.

Democrats were known to use the filibuster as well during former President Trump’s tenure to block legislation, including that regarding Trump’s border wall.

However, the letter says those who supported the filibuster before “now see clearly that it has become something very different in recent years.”

Those who support keeping the filibuster argue that whichever side is in control of the Senate will too easily be able to pass legislation and it will silence the minority.

I don't remember there being much filibustering in the Senate before the dems got all into borking SC nominees.

Naive, dimwitted, uninformed voters who voted for Biden, the moderate grandfatherly guy who can bring us together once the guy with the weird hairstyle and tweets is gone and we can be calm and healthy again like before Covid-——

You didn’t believe he would pack the Supreme Court, make possible rushed bills without a filibuster to curtail them, open the borders to welfare grabbing illegals and criminals (what were 11 Iranians doing coming in from Mexico? Learning Spanish to become diplomats?), throw thousand out of work on the pipeline and fracking projects, and raise insulin and other prices so people can’t afford them?

Well Grandpa Biden did them all and plenty more to come, idiots.

Nixing the filibuster ensures mob rule. The 50.1% can then rule roughshod over the 49.9%.

Democracy is dangerous. A democratic republic ensures the rule of law and protection of minorities.

Don’t forget to add a clause that sunsets this rule automatically if conservatives ever happen to defeat enough fraud to get 51

Good.point. We are not a democracy. We are a constitutional Republic.

I know it’s a cliche but bears repeating, that democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. In a democracy the rights of the minority do not exist if the majority runs roughshod over the minority.

Thia will be a tight vote . I’ve heard that Democrat senators Manchin and Tester oppose getting rid of the filibuster.

I guess we will see if Democrats apply muscle and arm twisting to wavering Senators on a vote to get rid of the filibuster. A lot of Democrat dream legislation, such as adding new states , Socialized medicine, citizenship for illegal aliens, and Green New Deal bills, will all hinge on whether the filibuster still exists.

As morons usually do, and particularly morons greedy for power or money, they ignore the ancient Chinese advice to “Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.”

They line for a dictatorship, and they may get it - along with the rest of us. In the short run they may enjoy it, but in the medium and long term they assuredly won’t. They have NOT thought this through - as is typical of the Useful Idiots on the Left.

IMO, the Rats will get Manchin and/or Sinema in line and dump the filibuster. Then it will be open season on the Supremes and DC statehood. The end of the socialists’ rise in America will only come when the pain caused by schools leading students away from constitutionalism, implementing seditious immigration policy, and defrauding voters becomes unbearable for a critical mass of productive citizens.

Don't know how long the ride back to sanity will be; it will certainly be bumpy.
