McConnell says Taylor Greene's embrace of conspiracy theories a 'cancer' to GOP, country
The Hill ^ | 02/01/21 07:15 PM EST | BY JULIEGRACE BRUFKE AND SCOTT WONG

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday blasted Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s embrace of “loony lies and conspiracy theories” as a “cancer for the Republican Party.”

“Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality,” McConnell said in a statement first shared with The Hill. “This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party.”

McConnell didn't mention Greene by name in his three-sentence statement, but his rare, scathing remarks about a freshman GOP lawmaker from the other chamber suggests he recognizes the potential damage her violent rhetoric and bizarre conspiracy theories could inflict on congressional Republicans as they try to take back both the House and Senate in next year’s midterms.

Greene responded on Twitter, writing that "the real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully."

Democrats are threatening to force a floor vote this week to oust the controversial Georgia Republican from the Education and Labor Committee and the Budget Committee if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) does not remove her first.

McCarthy is set to meet with her in Washington as early as Tuesday. Some Republicans said they did not anticipate McCarthy booting her off the committees given that she has the backing of former President Trump, who still holds enormous sway within the GOP.

But McConnell’s comments will up the pressure on McCarthy to act.

If McCarthy punts the issue to Democrats, it could force vulnerable House Republicans in swing districts to take a difficult vote.

“Of course she should be removed. While we can’t prevent her from calling herself a Republican, we can take a stand, and need to,” moderate GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) told The Hill on Monday evening.

But others fear removing her will further divide the conference, which is already embroiled in a civil war on where to turn next in a post-Trump era.

"It remains to be seen how big of an issue she is long-term. She's had a noisy entrance, but it's unclear what she will be viewed as and whether she will even be known in the public psyche in November 2022. She's had a tough transition to Congress. I'm not sure we need to go to the wall on this right now,” one senior GOP lawmaker said.

“To quote Dean Wormer, we may have to put her on Double Secret Probation. ... She's been a member for 30 days. It's still a little early, and I don't blame Kevin for not clamping down on somebody at this point. I don't think you need to strip someone of their committees this early," the lawmaker added.

Greene’s mounting controversies have created headaches for top Republicans as Democrats look to brand her as the face of the GOP.

A supporter of the pro-Trump QAnon movement, Greene has supported Facebook posts calling for the execution of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other top Democrats; she has endorsed false and hurtful conspiracy theories that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and mass school shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Parkland, Fla., were hoaxes; and she has embraced another strange conspiracy theory that the 2018 California wildfires were sparked by a laser from space controlled by a powerful Jewish banking family.

Greene told conservative news outlet One America News (OAN) that she is slated to meet with the former president “soon,” adding that “he supports me 100 percent.”

Trump’s support of the firebrand freshman is not making GOP woes any easier.

Top Republicans including Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel have condemned her remarks.

"The comments that are being put forward by Marjorie Taylor Greene are atrocious,” she told The New York Times. “They need to be condemned. They are violent, they are inaccurate — they are very, very dangerous.”

Greene has been a concern for Republicans since entering the primary to replace former Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.), with now-House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) having backed her primary challenger, John Cowan.

In addition to coming out against Greene’s embrace of conspiracy theories, McConnell also voiced his support for House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (Wyo.), who has come under fire from conservatives following her vote to impeach Trump for inciting the deadly riot on Jan. 6.

"Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them," McConnell told CNN in a statement.

"She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation."

His comments come just days before the House GOP conference is slated to meet, where conservatives’ efforts to oust the Wyoming Republican from her leadership role are slated to be discussed.

GTH, McConnell. You’re a deceitful POS who stacked the court appointments with RINOs.

Truly — a backstabbing, ungrateful scumbag you are.

Safely reelected and with Trump gone, McConnell can go back to being himself.

Remember, he supported Ford over Reagan in ‘76. That’s really all you need to know.

Conservatism is that icky thing he has to pretend to be every six years. Otherwise, he’s always clevery providing votes for democrat agenda items.

You will never hear ‘Ol Scrotum Chin publicly condemn the crazy, violent rhetoric and beliefs of Democrat whackjobs like Maxine Waters or the inciteful public statements of racists like Keith Ellison. I don’t recall him ever offering public criticism of Obola when he characterized Tea Party people as “teabaggers” and offered violent rhetoric against Republicans, nor did he excoriate the Hildebeast when she described Republican voters as “deplorables.” And then there’s the low IQ Democrat congressman who feared that Guam was going to tip over. Not a peep from scumbag Mitch over that insane statement. But boy oh boy, he doesn’t seem to hesitate when it comes to criticizing Republicans or vilifying Trump. McConnell is the lowest of the low.

I agree with McConnell more than most here. GOP doesn’t need birther/Q-types anymore than Democratic Party leadership needs to tolerate 9/11 truthers or whatever. No, they shouldn’t expel them, but the national party leadership is always wise to distance themselves and the party as a whole from the handful of gadflies that espouse conspiracy crap.

That said, Liz Cheney needs to go. Really hope Wyoming Republicans fire her sorry rear next year.

The media needs a new target for their raw hate now that Trump is gone. For now they’re targeting Greene. If they succeed in destroying her, they’ll move to their next victim to destroy. The media needs an “enemy”.

What do you think about the republican party’s failure to protect their constituents first amendment rights? How about their failure to protect their constituents from being ostracized from their own country for their political beliefs? Or their failure to safeguard our elections? Where’s the opposition to universal mail-in voting an obvious avenue for election fraud?

On the last two weeks we have seen numerous articles by Freepers pleading to stay the course with the Gutless Old Party. Even more disturbing, we have seen reports that Trump intends to work within the GOP and focus on election reform (an impossibility with corrupt Governors and Secretaries of State, and complicit Courts). It needs to be totally destroyed, brick by brick. The Republican Party is irredeemably rotten to its core and cannot be reformed or “taken over”. It’s sole purpose is to provide cover for Democrat fraud and belligerence.

funny, I don’t recall Mitch or other RINOS calling out the “loony lies and conspiracy theories” of the Democrats’ Russia Dossier as a “cancer for the Democrat Party”, even tho its origins were publicly known by Oct 2017 (and no doubt earlier by the RINOS):

24 Oct 2017: WaPo: Clinton campaign, DNC paid for research that led to Russia dossier
By Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman; Julie Tate contributed to this report.
The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.

Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.
After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the company in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Before that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by an unknown Republican client during the GOP primary...

After the election, the FBI agreed to pay Steele to continue gathering intelligence about Trump and Russia, but the bureau pulled out of the arrangement after Steele was publicly identified in news reports...

In early January, then-FBI Director James B. Comey presented a two-page summary of Steele’s dossier to President Barack Obama and President-elect Trump...

instead, these disgusting RINOS threatened the duly-elected President!!!

20 March 2018: Time: McConnell Says Trump Should Allow Mueller to Finish Russia Probe
BY BLOOMBERG
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised Special Counsel Robert Mueller and said he “should be allowed to finish his job,” breaking his three-day silence on President Donald Trump’s attacks on Mueller and his Russia investigation...

Republicans are privately alarmed that Trump may try to oust Mueller — a move that would risk setting off a constitutional crisis — but few have threatened specific consequences if the president does so.

One exception was Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who was asked Tuesday whether firing Mueller would be an impeachable offense.
“Probably so, if he did it without cause,” Graham said on commentator Hugh Hewitt’s radio Show. If Trump stopped an investigation into whether his campaign colluded with Russia, he said, “I can’t see it being anything other than a corrupt purpose.”...

Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, perhaps Trump’s most prominent Republican critic in the Senate, said he hoped his party’s leaders would speak out for Mueller.
“I’ve always felt, and a lot of my colleagues have said privately, that’s the red line we can not cross,” Flake said Monday. “I hope that leadership stands up and is more forceful in saying, ‘Don’t go there.”...

While conceding Trump’s attacks on Mueller aren’t helpful, (John) Cornyn said the message has been sent to the president many times, formally and informally, that he shouldn’t fire Mueller...

And Graham, who warned over the weekend that firing Mueller would be the beginning of the end of Trump’s presidency, says he’s not worried either.
If that did happen, he predicted Congress would step in and reinstate Mueller...
