Grocery workers in Oakland and San Jose could soon earn hazard or “hero” pay for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’ve talked to grocery store workers, they’re scared because there’s a new strain of COVID and because the cases continue to rise,” said Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas.
“They’re risking their lives to serve us,” said Bas. “Hazard pay would make a huge difference so if that if they get sick or a loved one gets sick they have a little bit of extra money to pay the bills.”

I sell coffee to businesses all day long and never thought of "Hazard" pay. My job is considered "essential".
However, since my income has been cut by 70% and I am currently earning less than I have in 40 years, maybe I deserve a "Guarantee" 40% increase in current income.

Most anyone who lives outside of a metroplex is probably living in food desert. I can count on one hand the years I’ve lived close enough for pizza delivery.
Saw today our grocery store had up another notice their employees are positive for covid.
Yes, grocery bills have skyrocketed... if you can even find what you need. This morning, I was tabulating fresh/frozen/canned foods costs to find lower priced products.
I have a friend who owns an independent supermarket, (Grocery Outlet),in Seattle. The $4.00/hr extra that they must now pay their employees will force him to move 8-9 miles outside the city limits.
The Seattle city council is micromanaging this once great city into oblivion.
Here, many things have been out of stock for a year even though we’re commuting distance from the city. Feb. 2020 was the end for many purchases and we didn’t have that much to choose from before covid hit since store shelves normally looked like Venezuela. We still have limits on purchases.
Hadn’t been able to get any Lysol or Clorox products for a year. I’m on cloud nine after scoring some over priced Microban spray and wipes a couple days ago at an office supply of all places. Have scored only one little 3 pack of yeast in a year and that was only after throwing a 3 month fit for them to get some. Finally got a small bag of cornmeal a couple months ago and that was out of stock since the 2019 holiday rush for it before most ever heard of covid. I tried getting pears for Thanksgiving and apples for Christmas with no luck. Had to buy and freeze celery in Sept. or there wouldn’t have been dressing for the holidays. Nixed the fruit salad and used the last of a half box of Jiffy mix for a small corn casserole at Christmas.
There is no reason for the shortages. None at all. It isn’t only food but everything. Guess suppliers don’t want to waste the gas and employee pay to stock shelves outside the cities.
