(AFP) - New Zealand unveiled a blueprint Sunday to phase out petrol-powered cars while its dairy industry, a key pillar of the economy, must slash cow numbers under the ambitious plan to be carbon neutral by 2050.
The changes are among a raft of recommendations presented to the government by the Climate Change Commission on steps New Zealand must take to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the document, which will now go out for public consultation, showed the impact of the reforms would not be an economic burden.
"The cost of action on the economy is not as great as many have previously thought. In fact, action on climate change is an economic opportunity for New Zealand," she said.
"Action on climate change is critical to our ongoing economic success. New Zealand exporters rely on our clean, green brand and there will be new opportunities for Kiwi businesses as we adapt to a zero-carbon economy."
A switch from fossil fuels would see hundreds lose their jobs in the coal, oil and gas industries but the commission expected many workers to be re-employed "in the circular economy, development of biofuels and hydrogen, and in deploying and supporting new technologies".
To reduce methane gas levels, the report said farmers needed to improve animal performance while reducing stock numbers by around 15 percent from 2018 levels by 2030.
"If farmers can continue to achieve productivity improvements in line with historic trends, these outcomes could be achieved while maintaining total production at a similar level to today," the report said.

at some point the world will wake up to the fact that the left’s preoccupation with “climate change” means something totally different
In the 21st century most government employees can be replaced by a server, or at most, a server farm
thats the climate change they are desperate to avoid
New Green Deal:
Forced veganism, except in Communist China and India.
The oil, coal industry workers will find new jobs in a gulag and be fed cockroaches.
Are they gonna’ get rid of their pets also? Just askin’ for a friend.
Tyranny of the North Island against the South Island.
“To reduce methane gas levels, the report said farmers needed to improve animal performance”
What on earth does that mean I wonder?
Surely it’s easier to just reduce the population of humans - and make the remainder vegans. Or am I missing something?
I think people should have the right to get sick and die early if they want to ‘save the planet’ (in their minds, at least). So far I’ve had a cousin die early, a friend’s 2 brothers die early (one was also a druggie, so who knows), and 2 of my sisters get severely sick. All were veggies, and my friend’s brother (the non-druggie) was told by his cancer (leukemia) doctor to start eating meat, but it was too late for him.
All good and well for them, but I like being healthy and having a healthy family, so I’m not planning to bow-down to AOC or her types and I have enough money to not have to do such.
Getting rid of cows will solve nothing. And unless everyone in New Zealand gives up all dairy products and beef it just means the same number of cows will be found somewhere else and the cost of dairy products and beef will increase since it must now be imported.
First they came for the firearms.
Then they came for the dairy cows.
The sheep are on the horizon.
When will the humans be on the list?
I bet they can’t give up their sheep.
New Zealand will know it has succeeded when steak is $99.99/lb.
The blokes down-under , their love life will be shot to hell ,
Clown world.
Bovines and other grazing animals are well suited for the rough terrain at the foothills of mountains that is not practical for used to grow grain. Thus, in the U.S., the plains are now used for grain, and the bovines are mostly removed to foothills. (I say mostly, because good numbers are raised in fenced-in areas). We have, today, about as many bovines as before the white man arrived, only instead of bison dominating the plains, they’re cows dominating the foothills of the Rockies.
As to why bovines release methane, it is because they convert grass into food (with the aid of microbes in their long stomach). If the bovines didn’t eat the grass, then the grass would die and rot by reason of other microbes. When organic material rots, methane is released depending upon the availability of oxygen. Thus, in rain forests (or, swamps), rotting organic materials results in massive release of methane.
We, in the U.S., should get carbon credits for (1) reducing the number of bison sufficient to account for the increase in the number of cows (making our supply of beef carbon neutral); and (2) for draining most of the swamps we found here (like the Great Black Swamp of Ohio) or converting them into pristine parks (like the Dismal Swamp of Virginia). We could sell some of the latter to New Zealand to off-set the methane released by their cows.
How did idiots gain control?
Perhaps the Kiwis could attach condoms to their rear ends of their cows and, so, in one fell swoop, solve the energy crisis, the climate change crisis, and get the public school out of sex education.
They don’t like big cow farts. Their sheep may make smaller farts but their numbers far outweigh their cattle.
When will they decide to slash the number of humans and their farts. Psst, vegans produce more farts than those who enjoy beef steaks.
Cowlisthenics.
Actually cow methane is the output of a very strange type of microbe called methanogens that steal energy out of a cow's digestive system. These microbes die in the presence of oxygen, so maybe giving cows the OxyClean Pod challenge would work.
Now that mRNA vaccines are a thing, possibly a vaccine could be assembled over a weekend to use antibodies to fight methanogens. Some new technology will suddenly make this a non-problem. 100 years from now people will laugh about the madness of our global warming lunatics.
