You probably heard that a snowstorm is approaching the major cities of the northeastern U.S. and the mid-Atlantic states.
Some forecasting models have outcomes as high as 24-36 inches of snow for some areas. Most at risk appears to be eastern PA, NJ, and MD. NYC and LI could also get hit with 18-24 inch amounts.
So far it looks a bit less extreme for most of New England, with forecast models saying 6-12 inches for most areas. That is also the case for western PA, central NY state, and some parts of the Midwest where the storm has already started.
Low pressure moving through Missouri at present time will track into Kentucky by Sunday. At that time, a coastal low will form off North Carolina, capture most of the energy of the inland storm, and produce heavy snowfall near the I-95 corridor. Strong east winds will develop near the coast, and inland the snow may blow around at times with near-blizzard conditions.
If you've heard a forecast for 6-12 inches, that may in fact verify but be aware that there are significant chances of a much heavier total snowfall especially around Baltimore to Philadelphia to NYC.
This thread can now be used for actual storm observations as we go forward. The east coast snowfall will begin Sunday afternoon. It will start soon in Ohio and w PA.
Temperatures with the snowfall are around 28-30 F, and a mixing zone is likely in parts of Delaware, southeast MD and southeast VA (sleet, ice etc). Heavy rain is the most likely outcome for Norfolk VA and that region. But the storm could transition to wet snow near the final portions on Tuesday.
Would advise some to stock up today before it gets messy as this may be a long-duration storm with a slow recovery period Tues-Wed. Could be Thursday before you'd want to go out again once the storm begins.
The Quad City (Prescott Valley, Prescott, Chino Valley, and Dewey) of AZ got 18-24 inches of snow in 36 hours last week. The average annual snowfall for the area is 14 inches.
Fortunately we have conservative mayors who get things done and the main and side streets were cleared almost immediately.
Not only that, but 2 polar lobes descend east side of Rockies for Feb. 7-9 and again Feb. 15-17 and either could generate a significant snowstorm from GL/OV/TV eastward.
The worst part is that it’s predicted to be WHITE.
I stream WOR in NYC during weekdays and their weather forecast is saying 18 inches in the city and more in the nearby suburbs.
We ALWAYS get far less than the predictions.
The predictions for this storm have been a over a foot.
Looks like we’ll wind up with 3-4”.
Same with rainfall — the predictions are always wildly high, and we get little or no rain.
They do this on purpose. Don’t know why, but it would be too easy to correct a model that is ALWAYS wrong in one direction.

Same problem here. Have maybe 1,000ft of steep driveway and parking spaces. Went out to reconnect the battery started it up and the brake pedal went to the floor. Moved my other truck down to the bottom near the road so I won’t have too much to shovel but its a hike up with groceries (and of course beer) even pulling it up on a sled.

I live 30 miles south of Boston on the coast too. So far this storm is a nothing burger. I wouldn’t mind a big dump of snow though, got three kids that would love to play in it. As long as we don’t lose power let it snow baby...
Mother Nature is white and obviously discriminates against minorities, because the bodega at street level doubles their box blunt prices during a blizzard.
Same here in Scituate.
Forecasts vary from all rain, to 6 inches of snow.

Seen worse. I’ll just sit here for three days and watch pet rescues and Sumerian history. Maybe learn me a little Gaelic or how to tie knots.

On this day in 11,231 BC, the snow over northern Indiana measured 1.2 miles deep. (more or less) Natives were anxiously waiting for a thaw.
LOL, very true! I’ve talked to some global warming believers sometimes, and tell them how thousands of years ago, enormous glaciers covered much of America. And how all that ice melted long before coal fired power plants and the industrial revolution.
I get mostly silence in return. But I hope they get the point, that all that ice melted due to NATURAL cycles of global warming, not due to man.
Good ole Norfolk will still get rain. That’s a plus.
I feel your pain, 1/4 mile driveway here. Truck should be back up in a couple hours when parts get here.
