In Greece tax records are combined with car registration...during the last economic collapse people just mailed in the licences plate.

This is NOT about taxing miles driven. After all, taxing the fuel that permits those miles to be driven already does that, though indirectly.
This IS about erecting an excuse for vehicle tracking. As if they don’t have enough ways to do that now what with phone tracking, traffic cameras and who know what else.
Exactly. The difference in road wear from a full-sized pickup truck and a Prius is inconsequential. In fact, the owner of the full-sized pickup truck pays far more (on a per-mile basis) in road taxes than any other vehicle class relative to the impact on road wear than any other user. That’s because a truck that gets 18 mpg will use twice as much fuel as a car that gets 36 mpg, but doesn’t cause anywhere close to twice the wear and tear on the system.

At this rate now paying over 6¢ per mile!!
I guess that isn't possible with recent model cars.
IF that mileage tax ONLY applies to electric cars-—fine...
But those of us who already pay gas taxes & then drive are going to pay heavily.
My neighbor drives 500 miles commuting each week. That alone is 26,000 miles a year.
It is complete punishment for rural dwellers.
2 vehicles-—NO COMPUTERS of any kind.
Massive stoppage nationwide...
Most states also charge more in their registration to trucks.
Even horse trailers get charged by weight.

If employer income tax withholding was eliminated, and everyone had to write a check every year for their income taxes, there would be big changes, very quickly, in our tax code. And in our government.

I once had a '59 car (bought used). When it was 20 years old or so something happened to the speedometer--the needle would swing all over the place and it made a racket. Someone unplugged it for me and the noise stopped, but from then on I didn't know what speed I was going and the odometer never changed.

That’s for the addition of the .25 cent in accumulated cyberspace. And don’t feel left out. If you lost more than you made, they will tax you for their looking. Someone has to pay for this created job. So you don’t get it or you lose what you didn’t have. If a citizen did this it would be called a ponzi scheme with the government the receivers.

I sincerely doubt they will do it on an independent computer. It wouldn’t be cost effective. They will make up an average mileage and just call it a use tax or some other new terminology. And it will be up to you to show you didn’t go that far and they will charge you for that action when they plug into your computer that your car will have to have to prove overages. And they know that most will go over the number and make up for those that didn’t and will not say a thing so that use fee doesn’t have to be reasonable. And the tax will have a cost of existence increase yearly because of it.
Oh, and of course the state has vehicles it has to pay for, so you’ll get that increase too. And the taxpayer will have no idea how far they went and if the trip was necessary because everything is changeable. And this time they will move the odometers forward, not back as it means faster depreciation for new vehicles, electric this time.
