Amazon seeks to block shareholder proposals on hate speech, diversity, workplace conditions and surveillance tech

Amazon has asked federal regulators to block a number of shareholder proposals that strike at the heart of many recent criticisms of the Seattle-based commerce behemoth, including its stances on curbing hate speech and offensive content, diversity in hiring, workplace conditions for hourly warehouse employees and its surveillance technologies.

If granted, Amazon’s requests would mean shareholders would not have an opportunity to vote on those proposals at the company’s shareholder meeting this year, where they would likely be rejected regardless. Last year, none of a dozen shareholder proposals was approved.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) declined to comment Wednesday on whether it intended to allow Amazon to drop the proposals from the shareholder meeting docket.

Companies often ask the SEC for permission to drop shareholder proposals they see as needless meddling into day-to-day business, and Amazon is no exception. Last year, it sought to exclude nine shareholder proposals before the annual meeting. The SEC sustained Amazon’s request in seven of those instances.

According to letters filed Tuesday with the SEC, Amazon is now requesting the regulator block shareholder proposals asking the company to report on its efforts to check hate speech across its many platforms, consider qualified women and nonwhite candidates for open positions in all roles, add an hourly associate to its board of directors and assess whether its products with surveillance capabilities violate human rights.

Amazon is also attempting to suppress a proposal from the New York State Common Retirement Fund that would require the company to conduct an audit on race and diversity, Bloomberg reported last week.

Even if Amazon is successful in preventing the proposals from surfacing at its shareholder meeting, the company likely will face continued scrutiny of the subjects of the petitions.

Left-wing controlled corporations are run by dictators, the same way that Biden is running the country, and the same way that left-wing states and cities are being run.

So, no surprise about what Amazon is doing. Glad Trump didn’t let the Amazon get that contract with the defense department last year.

For anyone who has never attended share-holder meetings of any type...there are absolute nutcases who come up and demand their five minutes of speaking-time. Even if it’s a gearbox company, a safe-maker, or a farm-tractor manufacturer...you can have some serious chatter about non-company stuff.

Well, if Parler is expected to block hate speech, shouldn’t Amazon be held to that same standard?

Nobody here is still buying anything from Amazon, right? I cancelled my Prime membership the day after they nuked Parler and called to tell them I’ll never buy anything from them ever again.

We’ve got to stop financing the enemy.

“Companies often ask the SEC for permission to drop shareholder proposals they see as needless meddling into day-to-day business...”

Imagine that! Shareholders actually thinking they’re the owners of the corporation.

Micromanagement by shareholders is just as bad as micromanagement by bosses.

“Micromanagement by shareholders is just as bad as micromanagement by bosses.”

Yeah? And who defines what is micromanagent?

Seems like what’s on the table are big company culture issues, not the color of cubicles.

I dumped PRIME today. It is my annual subscription due date.

I learned that I can "Suspend" the account instead of "Cancelling" it.

I considered both options and took "Suspend" because it may say more to them. (...not much, I know.)

I wrote this:
Jeff,
My Account is PAUSED until you stop your CENSORSHIP, CANCEL Culture, Word-Burning manipulation, and OUTRIGHT FASCIST* political INFLUENCING activities.
What is $100,000,000,000 minus $119? Still $100,000,000,000 (rounded). But at least I feel better not fueling your “Hate America First” campaign.
Now you can put ME on your LIST.
Not a fan,
Ken

I read this a.m. that Amazon was petitioning the Feds to ban mail-in voting for a union.

If so, hypocrisy at its best, and confirms our Banana Republic status.

The shareholders have no business deciding the culture of the company. That is micromanagement by any description.

That’s pure BS. So if you’re a shareholder who owns 60% of a company you have no say so on the culture of that company?

If you have 60%, or even 51%, elect a board that will make the changes you require, but don’t legislate it at the shareholder meeting.
