Insulin was discovered by two canadian chemists who donated it to a local university on the condition it not be a for profit item. IOW, this was too important to life to hold people hostage for, hence their humanitarian donation to medical science.

Insulin has been available since 1922. The first synthetic insulin was created in 1978. Therefore it is not under patent and should be easily available and inexpensive.
