General Motors plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035

GM plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035, ending production of its cars, trucks and SUVs with diesel- and gasoline-powered engines.

The company’s “aspirations” are part of a larger plan for the Detroit automaker to be carbon neutral by 2040 in its global products and operations.

GM’s plan comes a day after President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders that prioritize climate change. For several years, GM has touted a guiding “triple zero vision,” including a future with zero emissions through electric vehicles, but it never announced a timeframe. The other goals include zero congestion and zero crashes through advanced safety technologies and self-driving vehicles.

“For General Motors, our most significant carbon impact comes from tailpipe emissions of the vehicles that we sell – in our case, it’s 75 percent,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in message on LinkedIn. “That is why it is so important that we accelerate toward a future in which every vehicle we sell is a zero-emissions vehicle.”

Electric vehicles, including battery-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles, are currently a niche segment of the global automotive industry, estimated at less than 5% of sales by analysts. EVs are more costly to produce than those with internal combustion engines due to the battery and fuel cells that power the vehicles. But automotive executives and analysts are bullish that EVs, led by stricter regulations to reduce carbon emissions, are the future for the automotive industry.

And the grid to charge them will be ready by 2065.

If we are building 120 new nuclear plants in the U.S. so we will be upgrading our grid by 2035, then okay we can move toward electric cars. But Thats not what we are doing.

= = =

HOw much carbon comes from tires wearing down?

What happens when that becomes the significant contributor?

And then there is asphalt paving.

Darned whether we do or don’t.

Ford has since backed California’s recent moves to shift to only zero-emission car sales by 2035, essentially barring new gas-powered car sales by that year. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed the executive order establishing the target on the hood of a bright red Ford electric Mustang.

Great! less competition for Ford and Chevy. I predict there is a bankruptcy in GM’s future. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Word is the 2035 e-Vette Z-06 will have dual Hemi-Hamster cage wheels with 10KW generators on each one. Models come standard with 500 hamsters, and an high-end option of 1200 hamsters.

Guess I won’t be buying GM.

Me neither if they aren't focusing on them or supporting them at all, they'll be rolling out junk.

In many parts of the country, the electricity to charge the electric car is generated in evil fossil fuel generated power plants.

After Obama’s administration bailed out GM and became owners of the company, did GM ever pay off, or does the US government still have control of the company???

Same here. I rarely buy new cars nowadays due to the new privacy-invading black box, and now this crap. I’ve said it on FR the past 10 years and so...anything you plug to a wall with a socket is an APPLIANCE.

If I remember English grammar, the headline is saying that ONLY GM will be selling Electric Vehicles. If they mean that GM will sell ONLY Electric Vehicles, it should read

“GM will sell exclusively Electric Vehicles”

Is that correct?

If they and others go thru with this, then expect gas stations to start replacing pumps with charging stations. Also expects some fwys to be autonomous vehicles only. What a Brave New World it will be.

People keep bringing up that annoying little factoid....

Answer: Fairy dust and unicorn farts. These apparently convert quite readily to electricity.

Or maybe we could just harness the power in a lightning bolt.

Wind power and sunshine just aren’t going to make up the deficit.

I GOT IT! Human powered vehicles, some version of a bicycle or pedal car.

I leased a new Tacoma about six weeks ago. Told the salesman it might be my last gas powered truck. He said there’s too much money in fuel it won’t happen. I wonder what he thinks now.
When I bought a shotgun in November I wondered if it would be my last gun. Can I even find the ammo. Heck of a way to think I know but it’s all coming true.
