I know lots of people who are middle of the road types who would embrace the GOP if they had only fixed healthcare. Or even made an attempt.

The GOP had it lined up and McConnell was told he had the votes for a healthcare bill that already passed the House and President Trump already said he would sign. NEVER FORGET what John McCain did to sabotage this. He could have warned he would not vote Yes, but that would have given Trump and McConnell and the GOP a chance to find another yes somewhere before allowing a vote in the Senate. No, McCain waited until he was the last vote and he voted NO and killed it. He did this strictly out of venomous vindictiveness directed at Trump.

People should never forget that McCain did this.

Sorry but you are airbrushing history there. McCain was not the only no vote. Collins and Murkowski voted no, too. And McCain could only be the deciding vote because the GOP had defacto campaigned for a progressive Democrat to replace Sessions. The Democrat won that Senate race and Obamacare repeal failed. McCain really is a bit player here. Don’t let the GOPe fob off their failure to repeal Obamacare on him.

Two problems with the scenario you've laid out:

1. The 2017 "reform" laid out by the GOP wasn't close to a repeal of ObamaCare. In fact, it didn't really change much of the ACA at all.

2. As far as I'm concerned, the Senate charade was nothing more than a rigged vote for PR purposes. The GOP never had any intention of repealing ObamaCare (as I predicted back in 2009-2010 when it first passed). They just got caught with their pants down when the 2016 election gave them control of both Houses of Congress and the White House. They suddenly found themselves in the unexpected position where they couldn't just campaign against it and pass meaningless bills that would never get signed into law. John McCain was nothing more than the voluntary scapegoat who knew he was a loser and doomed to be a sh!t-stain in the history books, so he was willing to be the bad guy in that vote.
