Trump didn't try very hard. In his defense, there's no way to fix health care in a way that would be politically acceptable.

During the 2016 campaign he promised Americans that they would have "better health care, and it will cost less!"

That kind of idiocy was a great political slogan, but those of us who follow the issue closely recognized it as a comical joke. Making a promise like that is like telling people they can live in Trump Tower for $500/month.

“Health care will be a disaster as long as we let people live their lives with this delusional idea that they have this God-given right to pass the costs of their health care onto others.”

Healthcare is a complex problem, and I don’t claim to be smart enough to have the answers. But I am smart enough to know that if you promise you have something, and don’t deliver on that promise, most people will be annoyed by that.

Welcome to politics. That pretty much sums up the whole problem.

Robert Book covered this subject well in his classic book, The Tempting of America.

Promising to "fix health care" is no different than promising to stop climate change. At least the Democrats are smart enough to latch onto an issue where their failures can't be measured over a short period of time.

Coincidently the amount of money people pay for health insurance is tripled. Obamacare sucks. It’s destroying healthcare affordability and availability.

That's not a bug, that's a feature, to get to Single-Payer.

I know lots of people who are middle of the road types who would embrace the GOP if they had only fixed healthcare. Or even made an attempt.

The GOP had it lined up and McConnell was told he had the votes for a healthcare bill that already passed the House and President Trump already said he would sign. NEVER FORGET what John McCain did to sabotage this. He could have warned he would not vote Yes, but that would have given Trump and McConnell and the GOP a chance to find another yes somewhere before allowing a vote in the Senate. No, McCain waited until he was the last vote and he voted NO and killed it. He did this strictly out of venomous vindictiveness directed at Trump.

People should never forget that McCain did this.

Sorry but you are airbrushing history there. McCain was not the only no vote. Collins and Murkowski voted no, too. And McCain could only be the deciding vote because the GOP had defacto campaigned for a progressive Democrat to replace Sessions. The Democrat won that Senate race and Obamacare repeal failed. McCain really is a bit player here. Don’t let the GOPe fob off their failure to repeal Obamacare on him.

Two problems with the scenario you've laid out:

1. The 2017 "reform" laid out by the GOP wasn't close to a repeal of ObamaCare. In fact, it didn't really change much of the ACA at all.

2. As far as I'm concerned, the Senate charade was nothing more than a rigged vote for PR purposes. The GOP never had any intention of repealing ObamaCare (as I predicted back in 2009-2010 when it first passed). They just got caught with their pants down when the 2016 election gave them control of both Houses of Congress and the White House. They suddenly found themselves in the unexpected position where they couldn't just campaign against it and pass meaningless bills that would never get signed into law. John McCain was nothing more than the voluntary scapegoat who knew he was a loser and doomed to be a sh!t-stain in the history books, so he was willing to be the bad guy in that vote.

Well, we kept hearing there was going to be a GREAT healthcare plan, that would cover everybody, it was gonna be WONDERFUL, incredible, better than anything ever...

I *HATE* hype. Dem or Republican. don’t tell me something is going to be ‘wonderful’, tell me exactly what it will cover, what it will cast, and what date it will be implemented.

When you look at the deficit now compared to 4 years ago....

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Discusses How The GOP Has Failed The Country

Posted on  by Sundance

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem comments on ways in which members of the establishment Republican party ‘failed’ the country, her efforts in protecting certain rights in her own state, the hypocrisy of other lawmakers throughout the country, whether or not she has plans for higher office, and a fun fact about the geography of her state.  WATCH:

Kristi Noem: How the GOP failed the nation

The establishment Republican apparatus, writ large, is positioning Nikki Haley as the next GOPe candidate in line.  To achieve this goal they will reintroduce the splitter strategy in 2024 that will likely include Ted Cruz, Ron DeSantis and Kristi Noem.

DeSantis = MAGA

Noem = MAGA Lite with a Koch Twist

Haley = Full blown establishment (the female Jeb)

Cruz = Controlled opposition

See my last post on this. If the GOP had held onto the Alabama seat then there would have been another Republican in the Senate to crawl out of the mud and vote the bill down. My money would have been on Jeff Flake of Arizona (who didn’t run for re-election in 2018) or Shelley Caputo of West Virginia (who represents a state that has been the welfare basket-case of America for decades).

Interesting perspective. Maybe it’s just my biased view about rural states, but I see Noem as more of a MAGA leader than DeSantis.

We disagree. McCain was no scapegoat. He was a serpent.

Not ready for prime time. They’ll eat her up. Same if she’s the VP.

Ha! Right....and, who is? Ted Cruise?

Nope.

Let’s give her a chance before throwing her under the GOPe bus.

LOL....Haley needs to be kicked to the curb, with Ronna, McRomney and the rest of the repulsive RINOs.

Cruz is a Prez candidate has-been.

I see DeSantis-Noem as the leaders of the MAGA Patriot Pack.

“Not ready for prime time. They’ll eat her up. Same if she’s the VP.”

Really, on what basis do you make this statement? Do you see some attribute that Kamala has the Kristi does not?

I half expect to see a Trump/Noem ticket in 2024.

-- that we just have not had the fortitude to pursue --

It's not a matter of fortitude. It's a matter of desire. The GOP is not unified on immigration. The GOP has an open borders, amnesty wing, and it has an immigration hawk wing, and a mess of wishy washy members in the middle who will go where they are told.

The GOP was instigating some sort of forgiveness, buy out, whatever and this is what cost Cantor his primary election. The GOP just went underground after that, saying what it thinks people want to hear but having no intention of delivery.
