Fauci backs 'double-masking' in coronavirus fight, says 'likely more effective'

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, said two face masks are likely more effective than one against the novel coronavirus, despite significant uncertainty on the subject.

"If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective," Fauci told NBC News on Monday.

Infectious disease experts from Stanford Health Care, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins University recently told Fox News there is little to no evidence on the issue.

Double masking is one of the dumber ideas that have been proposed. Stacking up filters always increases the pressure differential across the filters. Just like blocking off some portion of the front of the filter with tape or plastic would.

When you increase the pressure behind the mask more air and droplets and whatever else you are exhaling will leak out around the edges of the mask. And it will be expelled with a higher velocity. Anybody who doesn't intuitively understand this never tried to put their hand over the end of the garden hose as a kid.

Double masking is likely to reduce the effectiveness of the masks, not increase it.
