A lot of the papers and related information seems to have become much more difficult to locate in search engines now than they were in the Feb - April 2020 time frame. This is very unusual as corona virus has been a hot research topic and typically this make the info more accessible, not harder to find.
Was it lifted by expiration of an Obama EO, or a Trump EO actively rescinding it? If the latter, this is truly bizarro world.

What was the purpose of the research? What was the practical application they were trying to achieve?
Not sure how and why, but it was announced in December 2017. Suspect it was done without Trump’s knowledge or approval

A lot of this seems to come out of AIDS research, which Fauci has been a key player since the 1980s .

Truly horrifying. Fauci should be jailed for life.
Too much corruption, lack of discipline/ethics, habitual covering up of mistakes and serious problems as well as general weirdness on the part of staff. More importantly, China does not sufficient talent pool of highly skilled labor to properly staff such a facility.
Chinese facilities do not have the proper technology, infrastructure, maintenance and operating procedures and security to operate gain of function research safely.
An accident or careless work could be responsible for the virus leak, but my suspicion has always been that an employee of the lab stole infected bats from the Wuhan lab to sell for food at the food market. That would typical for how things happen in China
