Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told “Just the News” on Friday that she expects the Democrat-led Senate and House will vote in favor of statehood for the District of Columbia and send the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk, who has expressed support for D.C. statehood in the past.
“The nation’s capital, the federal enclave, continues to exist as the nation’s capital and everything outside of those new boundaries becomes the 51st state. Our congresswoman – we had our first successful vote on statehood in the House of Representatives last year. She reintroduced the bill. She has a record number of sponsors.”
“It is going to be reintroduced in the Senate in a couple of weeks, and we expect to have a favorable vote in the Senate as well, and then it goes to the president of the United States. We have made a big focus to President Biden to support D.C. statehood and make it part of his 100-day agenda.”
“Just like you, we pay the same federal taxes as every citizen of the fifty states of the U.S. expect we do not have two senators. We literally have no one to speak for us in the Senate. We have to have full representation.”
If we still had a Constitution they would need to amend it to get this done.
“We literally have no one to speak for us in the Senate.”
Well for years you had Joe Biden as your Senator so there is some truth to that statement.
DC should be merged with Vermont.
Article I, section 8, clause 17:
“Congress shall have the power...To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings”
From Sourcery.
Soft target. Who can object? Representation. Who wants to be called a racist?
I think the Republicans should start floating the idea of combining the six NE states into one, they would lose 10 senators. Then they could add five more states without changing the flag.
DC has more population than Vermont or Wyoming.
I think there might be constitutional challenges.
It's 68 square miles. Rhode Island is more than 1200 square miles.
It's a city, not a state. We crease a thousand states if DC is one.
As someone noted: DC is 61 sq mi with every inch of it already spoken for and most land owned by the federal government with much of that parks and monuments.
Where will the state capital go? The legislature? The courts? The state offices? The state police? How can a state be sovereign - borders, laws - when it occupies the same land as the federal patch?
Leftists moan about Wyoming and Montana having two senators. DC would be smaller than some private cattle ranches and have two senators.
Alaska and Hawaii offered something to the union. What does swampy, tacky DC offer?
It is unconstitutional and if the Supreme Court allows it. Every Justice who affirms it should be impeached... but they won’t be, of course..
They are going to be called racists no matter what they do.
If all they have to do is vote on it, I propose that I become a state. That would be pretty cool.
Get ready for the highest crime rate of any state.
And I’m not even counting the f’ing politicians
Popcorn with Marion Barry sting reruns. Don’t they need a governor first to appoint the two senators? Or do we just let Dominion make the call now?
And don't forget about the embassies.
Much of the land is considered the sovereign soil of the foreign countries whose embassies are there.
This new "state" will have more foreign territory than Untied States territory.

Wouldn't that require a SCOTUS that isn't paid for or being blackmailed? Freepers will be whining about actions that are going to occur anyway, mostly because a vast majority of the country doesn't give a damn.
Hoping Texas could secede from this mess - giving DC a place for our ‘star’
The area was appropriated from the state of Maryland. It should be returned to them.
