The railroad system in Dalian, northern China, collapsed citywide on Tuesday for up to 20 hours after the Adobe Flash programing software stopped running.
Adobe had announced as early as 2017 that it would cease support for the multimedia software on Dec. 30 last year. The American software company eventually ended the operation of all Flash content on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s chaos arose after China Railway Shenyang failed to deactivate Flash in time, leading to a complete shutdown of its railroads in Dalian, Liaoning province. Staffers were reportedly unable to view train operation diagrams, formulate train sequencing schedules and arrange shunting plans.
Authorities fixed the issue by installing a pirated version of Flash at 4:30 a.m. the following day.

This happened in our company, we still had a few apps written in Flex years ago that were still being used.

I bet they were already using a pirated version of Flash but then they had to switch to a hacked version of Flash to get it running again.

Even MORE shocking is that the system was running on a legitimately licensed, legal copy of Flash in the first place!

I don’t know anything about what Adobe did for my computer but after several notifications, I uninstalled mine and haven’t noticed any difference......

This is hilarious. Adobe stopped supporting Flash because so few developers would use it any more. I got messages every other day, starting two months ago, that it would be discontinued. Surely the Chinese were already using a pirated version or they would have also received the messages.

While it’s cute to see it happen in China, it’s scary to think that entire train systems can be shutdown by basically a ‘software glitch’.

Back in the early days of the Internet, I was a Flash master, creating dazzling, leading edge, world class websites utilizing (then Macromedia) Flash. One of the last websites I built with Flash earned the 2007 W3 Silver Award for Website Creative Excellence.
I haven’t had Flash installed on my browsers in years.
It’s dead, Jim.

The Opera browser uses Flash and it corrupted my Aptik transport software when I tried to install Linux Mint Cinnamon on a new system. I had to completely remove Opera for Aptik to work again. Adobe has caused numerous problems. The system would hang waiting for a response from Adobe. Flash, good residences that it is gone.
