In the latest sign of trouble for the standardized testing empire that has played a major role in college applications for millions of students, the organization that produces the SAT said on Tuesday that it would scrap subject tests and the optional essay section, further scrambling the admissions process.
The move comes as the testing industry has been battered by questions about equity and troubled by logistical and financial challenges during the coronavirus pandemic.
Critics saw the changes not as an attempt to streamline the test-taking process for students, as the College Board portrayed the decision, but as a way of placing greater importance on Advanced Placement tests, which the board also produces, as a way for the organization to remain relevant and financially viable.
“The SAT and the subject exams are dying products on their last breaths, and I’m sure the costs of administering them are substantial,” said Jon Boeckenstedt, the vice provost for enrollment management at Oregon State University.
The main SAT, taken by generations of high school students applying to college, consists of two sections, one for math and the other for reading and writing. But since at least the 1960s, students have also had the option of taking subject tests to show their mastery of subjects like history, languages and chemistry. Colleges often use the tests to determine where to place students for freshman courses, especially in the sciences and languages.

There is no need for the SAT. According to Kristen Clarke who will head the U.S. D.O.J. Civil Rights Division, intelligence is dependent on melanin. It therefore follows that the darker you are the smarter you are. The only test you need for admission is the darkness of your skin.
“Equity” boils down to “hey, stupid people need college degrees too!” And who could argue with that?
The SAT has been dumbed down so bad that a 1960’s elementary school child could ace it yet the average score today is below 1000 and falling still.
“The SAT will only judge race, ethnicity, gender and political affiliation.”
Yep. That is where college admissions are at these days. One college after another have all claimed this is their policy.
Ah—Blame the China Virus instead of the fact that public high schools aren’t teaching students anything.

Why stop at the SAT? I am sure the LSAT and MCAT are tools of white supremacists too.

I have been in education for more than 30 years. A high school diploma these days in any inner city/low ses area is a 6th grade education when I was in school. The average student walking into my high school has a 3.9 grade level in reading and a 4.0 grade level in math. And they all want to go to college despite the fact that they cannot read, write or do math at grade level and don’t like reading or studying. Most don’t like school. Perrrrrrrfect college candidates.
Now we drop the SAT that correlated highly with IQ and success in college; probably because it is raycis or something. Sure, that will help (/sarc).

The Chinese graduate more students with real engineering degrees than we have in colleges and we remove admission standards because they hurt the less abled’s feelings. What could possibly go wrong?
Admission based on race ratios not merit.
gotta have equity, equity,equity-——equality is way too hard, and has already been trashed as an impossible ideal. Let’s just cut to the chase and reward everybody with stuff they didn’t earn.
Why test? The colleges just want to $100k+ money.
They really do not care that you are in debt and cannot get a job with the mostly worthless schooling they have.
