~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Air Warfare Center Orlando, Florida

FLnawcorlando5

The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) is an Echelon IV command of the United States Navy, reporting to the Commander, Naval Air Warfare Center - Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. NAWCTSD is located in Orlando, Florida in the Central Florida Research Park, adjacent to the University of Central Florida (UCF). The facility is a part of a larger military installation within the Central Florida Research Park known as Naval Support Activity Orlando (NSA Orlando).

The roots of NAWCTSD reach back to April 1941 when then-Commander Luis de Florez became head of the new Special Devices Desk in the Engineering Division of the Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics. De Florez championed the use of “synthetic training devices” and urged the Navy to undertake development of such devices to increase readiness. In June, the office became the Special Devices Section.

FLnawcorlando3

Throughout World War II, the Section developed numerous innovative training devices including ones that used motion pictures to train aircraft gunners, a device to train precision bombing, and a terrain modeling kit to facilitate operational planning in the field. The Special Devices Section grew and became the Special Devices Division. In August 1946, the Division, at its newest home at Port Washington, Long Island, New York, was commissioned the Special Devices Center.

The roles of the Department of Defense, the Navy, and the Naval Air Systems Command are changing. Simulation and training are now key to ensuring military preparedness and to adapting to new and changing roles and missions.

These changes, coupled with diverse threat potentials, require innovative approaches to how our military trains. NAWCTSD will continue to play a vital role in responding to evolving training and simulation needs. NAWCTSD will also continue to work on transfering its products to non-military applications through cooperative agreements.

Unbreakable Faith

Bible in a Year:

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

Isaiah 26:3 After doctors diagnosed their first-born son with autism, Diane Dokko Kim and her husband grieved facing a lifetime of caring for a cognitively disabled child. In her book Unbroken Faith, she admits to struggling with adjusting their dreams and expectations for their beloved son’s future. Yet through this painful process, they learned that God can handle their anger, doubts, and fears. Now, with their son reaching adulthood, Diane uses her experiences to encourage parents of children with special needs. She tells others about God’s unbreakable promises, limitless power, and loving faithfulness. She assures people that He gives us permission to grieve when we experience the death of a dream, an expectation, a way or a season of life.

In Isaiah 26, the prophet declares that God’s people can trust in the Lord forever, “for the Lord . . . is the Rock eternal” (v. 4). He’s able to sustain us with supernatural peace in every situation (v. 12). Focusing on His unchanging character and crying out to Him during troublesome times revitalizes our hope (v. 15).

When we face any loss, disappointment, or difficult circumstance, God invites us to be honest with Him. He can handle our ever-changing emotions and our questions. He remains with us and refreshes our spirits with enduring hope. Even when we feel like our lives are falling apart, God can make our faith unbreakable.

Reflect & Pray

Have you ever struggled with being honest with God when life feels overwhelming? How has God helped you deal with the death of a dream or expectation?

Loving God, please help me believe You can always be trusted with my honest emotions.

“Never thought that in the land of Disney 🌎 World and Universal, there is a military base.”

I went to boot camp in Orlando in 68’. No Disney then.

There sure is. True story, hand to God. When I was first married my husband and lived in trailer on 17 acres on the St. Lucie River here in Florida.

Now for reasons unknown to me our phone number got crisscrossed with the Orlando Naval Station. Mind you this happened when the operator dialed for people trying to reach the base. It happened so often I finally just gave callers the direct number for the base. Usually a “No, this is not the naval base, here is the number. You can call it yourself.” But not for one person. When I told them this was not the Orlando Naval Station they seriously asked me “Are you sure?”

I told them I would certainly notice a bunch of sailors going about their business all day and that though we owned a jon-boat I would hate to think the naval defenses of the U.S. were counting on it. I bet to this day they think I was pulling a prank.

I lived in Orlando in ‘67/’68 and my brother was in the Navy.

I could not believe him when he called me to tell me the Navy was moving him to Orlando! NO WAY! THERE IS NOTHING HERE! Then Orlando was a sleepy central FLA town with lots of pretty lakes and NOTHING going on.

He told me the Navy was opening a new training base there, and when he came down we shared a house on Livingston Ave.

Then Disney made the huge announcement about Disney World, and the rest is history. Sweet old Orlando is long gone......
