Chao is a daughter of the founder of Evergreen Group, a Taiwan company with extensive interests and relationships with mainland China.
There are a lot of Taiwan companies with interests and relationships with China. There is also a pro-China faction in Taiwan, mainly supported by big business interests.
Old man Chao was opposed to the independence-leaning (anti-unification) factions in Taiwanese politics.
The popular opinion in Taiwan is anti-China, anti-unification with China, but as in the US these are to some degree “deplorables”, as in the US.
Note also that Taiwan political parties do not map easily to US politics. The ruling party there today, the DPP, nationalist and anti-unification, are more like US Democrats on other issues.
Elaine Chao I believe was a long term spy for the communists just like the chinese driver for Dianne Feinstein who became the office manager for her over 30 years seeing all the defense secrets as she was on the defense committee.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — who will soon switch jobs — will go to church with Biden on the morning of inauguration along with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
In a sign of unity, the top lawmakers will pray together at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington before Biden’s swearing-in, according to two people familiar with the schedule. Biden will be only the second Catholic to serve as U.S. president.
President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have refused to do the traditional get-togethers with the incoming president and will not attend inauguration.
