I don’t think it’s ever been done but the remedy is removal from office but they will try to argue he should be banned from seeking office again. That’s their goal and that is unacceptable.
Trump, if this happens, should give a statement that on the very spot he stands, he is creating a new political party. “You can go to hell, I’m going to win.” Gotta love Davey Crocket.

Trump is president until Noon, January 20, 2021.
They're going to claim that he was impeached while in office, hence the need to rush it through the House, and that the Senate trial is still required by the Constitution. How that will play with the courts remains to be seen.
