Why so many people are getting swept to sea along California's coast
SF Gate ^ | January 12, 2021 | by Ashley Harrell

A magazine editor visiting from Salt Lake City was walking along a Humboldt Bay jetty with her son.

A school principal was on vacation, taking family photos by the sea in Mendocino Big River Headlands State Park.

A father and his two young children were spending a Sunday at Blind Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park.

A man in his 30s was hiking with friends along the coast in the Marin Headlands.

A man and woman were searching for mussels on the rocks at Pescadero State Park.

Then came the waves.

Each of these people was swept from dry ground into the frigid, turbulent sea. Each faced the shock of the cold, the pounding of incoming, indifferent waves.

Three were pulled from the sea during difficult rescue attempts and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Four are still missing and presumed dead. One — the still unnamed man who was searching for mussels — is in the hospital.

All of these incidents occurred along California’s coastline over the last five weeks. Three took place over the weekend. It feels like the right time to ask: Is this normal?

Yes and no.

“The way this winter season is going, there has been a lot of strong storm activity across the North Pacific that’s responsible for these wave trains coming in,” said Rick Canepa, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “There’s nothing unusual about the timing.”

My first experience in the Atlantic was waves lapping at my ankles around the Florida Keys. This is a favorite wave-watching site near home:

Easy answer. Because of Donald Trump who didn’t send the UN enough money to stop climate change which led to big waves and death.

You know the thought occurs to me, in a couple of weeks, you can probably literally threaten to kill Donald Trump and nobody will care. In fact, you might even get a job.

That jetty on Humboldt bay takes a handful of people every year. Not a good place to be.

If you count the people still missing, the California coast has seen more than the average number of yearly deaths over the past five weeks.

“Real answer: Rouge Waves.”

Yes, Ive seen signs warning of Rogue Waves since I moved to CA 21 years ago. I don’t know if the number of drownings have increased.

I think we should ban the ocean. Trump was seen at least once swimming in the ocean so it must be collusion. Also it has that dihydrogen monoxide that is used by many military applications.

For the children of course.

“Rouge Waves.”

Red waves? I like sparkling blue waves myself.

*Rogue” waves are to be avoided, though.

When the sailors of old came around the horn and started exploring the pacific along our west coast, it was noted how dangerous the northern parts were. The ocean here (norther CA) on up is beautiful but treacherous.

Heck the USS Milwaukee ended up beached up by Eureka in early 1917. She was Overcome by waves and wind when trying to salvage a sub that had run aground. She could not be moved, and sat there till 1918 when a storm broke her in two.

The northern coast is quite vicious.

That Ocean out there is anything but PACIFIC - I’ll stay on the relatively benign (and mostly sandy-shored) Atlantic ...
But no hurricanes in Calliforny!

“It isn’t Panama City, FL out there. The Pacific is cold, rough, and dangerous. I haven’t enjoyed being in the ocean at any California beach north of Coronado.”

Don’t get too complacent down here, either.
