Thanks for the Mint recommendation! I’ve been using Ting, but Mint seems much cheaper. I’m calling to switch in the next couple days.

There's an option, although it's limited. I lived in a weak signal area with AT&T. So they sent me a "Microcell" that attached to my router and basically extended the cell coverage within the house and into the yard a bit. Worked well. Moved, so I no longer use it.

The downside is you're not going to have much coverage outside the house. So driving to and from work, you'd be without a signal until you come into range of a cell tower.

Unfortunately, that's no longer an option for ATT, unless you can get lucky and find an old one on ebay or something. And ATT never sent them to you, I had some buddies that got them and they were both charged $2-300 if I remember correctly. If you can find one, it should still work, although ATT no longer supports them so you're on your own. Also, they only had 3G versions, so you won't get 4G/LTE speeds. If you mostly manage half a bar of 4G from the tower, your phone will prioritize that crappy useless connection over staying on the full good connection on 3G. You could turn off your 4G in settings, but then you have to switch it on/off every time you leave home if you don't want to sit on 3G only.

You can buy cell boosters, where you install an antenna on your roof pointing at the closest tower, and then it connects to an antenna in the house for all the phones. This only works if you do have a weak signal, but it's consistently present. These also cost ~$100-150 for a 4G booster, and over $500 if you need a 5G booster.

ATT really tries to push you buying a phone that supports wifi-calling. And, I think most carriers charge extra for the service, so there you go. This is a charge ON TOP of you already paying for the data, they add the charge to allow the phone's functionality. I actually got lucky and got around this with some older phones, by installing a custom ROM I was able to ignore some of those carrier-enforced limitations. I've even NEVER gotten any of the missing-child/old person alerts, or even the Presidential ones. That wasn't my intent, but the custom ROM already had those striped out.

You can also download some apps (like Signal) that provide wifi calling, but most of those require the receiver to have the same app. I dunno how many will give you actual wifi calling, but I do know that Google Voice is/was supposed to start supporting that at some point, and I can confirm texting works on it when I have wifi but no cell data, but I have yet to have voice calls work. Could just be a setting though.

I looked at it, but PureTalk is a repackaging of AT&T services, while Mint is a re-packaging of T-Mobile Services.

In the trade-offs between the two, IMO... T-Mobile are not the bad guys... (which is only partially, and in small part, but not entirely about the tech on offer ? )

It boils down to who you trust the least.

Or, perhaps for Mr. Limbaugh... who is paying him for the nod.

The Sim card is the plug in chip that tells your phone what it is and whose the service provider is, etc.

But, different phones have different size chips... like an SD card on a computer... a new micro-SD might not fit or be useful on an older machine without an SD adapter ?

With a Sim you can plug a new chip into your old phone and keep using it... don’t need to buy a new phone... so “3 Way”
here means you get a Nano SIM card with Micro and Standard SIM adapters... so it should work on the phones in the market that are working now.

Don’t have it yet... so, no... beyond what others report in terms of the potential for congestion slowing data transfer rates down during peak hours...

“Your mileage may vary”... in context depending on what your local area has for capacity relative to demand.

Just checking coverage maps doesn’t tell you very much about how the coverage that exists on the map actually meets the demand that exists with the available infrastructure.

Apple Phones

Go to settings
General
About
Scroll to the bottom

Carrier Lock: if it says no SIM Restrictions you should be good to switch. If it says your current carrier, you are stuck paying out the contract.

OK. For years I’ve switched an extremely small (nano?) sim card between my BlackBerry Priv and BlackBerry Classic often, so I understand that part. It’s the 3-way I didn’t understand. Now I get it. Thanks!

What about this option?

Tracfone Wireless is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that partners with four major cell phone companies: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Although Tracfone doesn’t own any wireless network infrastructure, it has agreements with the Big 4 that allow the company to offer service to its millions of customers.

Democrats are the party of big Corporations.

Funny.

Since Trump, our side is for "the little guy." Who woulda thunkit?

I still cannot fathom how the traitors in big corporations think kissing up to the Dems and Socialists will go on forever in the reward department. If they want to open some branches they'll have to prove the carbon footprint and LGBTQ hiring are in line, plus compliance with a new couple of thick binders of regulations (as: a worker starting a shift with one hour of work will be paid for a full shift---common in manufacturing plants.) Maybe paid daycare for worker with a child. How about 90% US income tax bracket?

That's why the Rolling Stones moved to France. Lee Iaaocca also said "To give me a $100,000 raise you have to give me a million dollar raise minus the 90% taxes taken off the top."
