A Capitol Hill police officer who was assaulted in Wednesday’s riot by violent protesters loyal to President Trump has died, a source familiar with the matter tells NPR’s Carrie Johnson.

The Department of Justice is opening a federal murder case into the death of the officer, the source said.

I firmly believe that they were hoping for a gunfight yesterday, with as much death as possible. Imagine that headline: "Armed Insurrection at our Nation's Capital! Multiple deaths!" That would've resulted in an immediate nationwide outcry for extreme gun control. I truly believe that was the plan. But conservatives thwarted them. So they're trying to salvage as much of that headline as they can.
