Well, it may be just you getting “freaked out”.

It’s more like all of us (who didn’t get leave back-in-the-day) being a bit pious about how awesome and perfect soldiers we were.

Mind you, I was (am) a pilot, so they barely trusted me with a rifle after initial training. I had to take a remedial class and do practical work (basically guarding a border crossing) at a rather embarrassingly-advanced age so I could get my civilian pistol and shotgun license.

In time, I got used to it. Like living near the subway in NYC. But you would never catch me handling a firearm that way.
