Dozens of nations miss deadline to boost climate ambition

Paris (AFP) - More than half the world's nations failed to submit upgraded commitments by year's end to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, straggling behind the schedule of accelerated climate ambitions set out in the Paris Agreement.

Almost every country on the planet signed up to the 2015 Paris deal, which calls for capping global warming at "well below" two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, and 1.5C if possible.

As the December 31, 2020, deadline approached, several large emitters said they would achieve net-zero output this century, but many nations allowed the year end to pass without publishing details of their renewed short-term targets.

As of January 1, only around 70 out of nearly 200 nations had filed updated commitments, according to the United Nations, with some countries blaming delays on the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UN has estimated that emissions need to be cut by 7.6 percent a year in the ten years to 2030 if there is to be a hope of limiting heating to 1.5C.

Earth's surface has already warmed nearly 1.2C on average, intensifying extreme weather and making it more deadly.

David Wanksow, International Climate Director at the World Resources Institute, said there had been some "important headway" made on climate action in recent weeks, particularly with upgraded 2030 targets from Britain and the EU.

But much more would need to be done in 2021.

"A number of major emitters still need to come forward with greater ambition, especially to follow-through on their net-zero commitments with 2030 targets that match their long-term vision. This year will be a critical test."

Who the heck would have any idea what a “pre-industrial level” would be? Anyone who bothered to make such a measurement in, say, 1750 would be using instruments so crude as to be worthless.

Oh, wait. What am I talking about? When it comes to Global Warming accurate measurements aren’t necessary. Just make up the data, then raise the alarm.

How many trees will need to be planted globally to reduce carbon emissions? Seems like a simple answer.

Amount of Carbon emitted - Amount of Carbon Sequestered = ?

Based on this, you now know how many trees and what type of trees that sequester carbon you will need to offset the emitted carbon.

We surely know by now what type of trees sequester the most carbon and with satellite imagery, we can approximate how many trees are in the world. I guess the variable is how long will it take for the trees to mature enough to sequester carbon. We can approximate how much carbon is sequestered by trees based on age.

Based on country of high emissions we can then plant trees in the region. In addition, because we are going green, we can build solar/hydro powered desalinization facilities, and using a technology where pipes are coated with solar capturing material and run to areas where trees will be planted.

Given this, countries would get fresh water for farming and drinking which would then result in new economies emerging.

My suggestion is we do this first in Sinai. We move the UN there, and make this the new home for the Palis. We then nuke the place from orbit, just to be sure.

Are you saying that using tree rings to determine the temperature is not that accurate?

The really troubling thing about all these Global Warming measurements is that you are never told the estimate of uncertainty. Such estimates can be calculated, and should be a part of any scientific measurement. But you never see them with Global Warming.

I suspect that Global Warming measurements have a estimate of uncertainty so large as to make the measurement itself worthless.

Stated as if that's a fact. Really? I lived in Florida for 33 years, and every time I went to the beach, the ocean was in the same damn place it was the last time I went to the beach.

Absolutely. Considering the accuracy of thermometers back them (and most of the world didn’t even have them) pretending knowing temperatures within a tenth of a degree is ludicrous.

And not just that, but to do a meaningful comparison between now and then the thermometers would have to be at the same location over a couple hundred years.

Go to your backyard with an infrared laser thermometer and take some readings here and there and see how much variation there. That’s true even inside the house where temperature is more uniform.
