OSLO - The sale of electric cars in Norway overtook those powered by petrol, diesel and hybrid engines last year, with German auto-maker Volkswagen replacing Tesla as the top battery-vehicle producer, new data showed on Tuesday.
So-called battery electric vehicles (BEV) made up 54.3% of all new cars sold in the Nordic country in 2020, a global record, up from 42.4% in 2019 and from a mere 1% of the overall market a decade ago, the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) said.
Seeking to become the first nation to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2025, oil-producing Norway exempts fully electric vehicles from taxes imposed on those relying on fossil fuels.
The policy has turned the country’s car market into a laboratory for automakers seeking a path to a future without internal combustion engines, vaulting new brands and models to the top of bestseller lists in recent years.
“We’re definitely on track to reach the 2025 target,” OFV Chief Executive Oeyvind Thorsen told a news conference.
BEV sales accelerated in the final months of 2020, hitting its highest level for any single month in December, with a 66.7% share of the car market.
By contrast, cars with diesel-only engines have tumbled from a peak of 75.7% of the overall Norwegian market in 2011 to just 8.6% last year.
While the electric market share will keep rising, there is uncertainty around how many cars producers will allocate to Norway as European demand is increasing, said Harald Frigstad, chief executive at Norwegian car importer Bertel O. Steen.
The seller of Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz as well as the Kia, Peugeot, Opel, Citroen, DS and Smart brands, predicted around 70% of its sales would be of fully electric models in 2021.

Sooner or later you run out of other peoples electricity. Even Musk says there won’t be enough to power all the electric cars. Oh, and ford is moving in that direction with production facilities and vehicles too. The electric mustang is butt ugly. NOT worthy of the name actually. But it ain’t my company so..............
I suppose if they can sell in Norway with cold temperatures, they can sell anywhere.
How much is government regulation or incentives driving those numbers?

There isn’t enough copper to make all these electric cars and electric wires for the world. We would need to fund a copper asteroid.
It’s really cold up there in Norway. What could go wrong? They’re going to find a lot of peoplecicles dead in their cars.
And they’ve got the petroleum resources to generate all that electricity!
True story: had a brief discussion with a liberal college professor a few years back. She was espousing the virtues of socialism, and how it produced the highest standards of living on the planet. She identified Norway as the best example. I asked her if she knew where all that money came from. Her answer, God’s Honest Truth, was “Whaling?”.
Picture reminds me of all the horses tied up in front of the Longbranch Saloon.
Where are the raw materials for these batteries coming from?
Are they harnessed in a environmentally friendly way?
I don’t mind multiple sources of electric generation and vehicle transport sources, just don’t act like your #2 doesn’t stink.
First, I’m not sure the article is honest...
Second. People in much of Norway live in places you’d never go more than a handful of miles because you live in seclusion...surrounded by Fjord/Land locked.
Nordic countries are still almost entirely White, sub 10 million populations, and have a quality work ethic.
Auto companies are fully in bed with government mandates for EV
ICE cars, especially the most basic fleet ones, are very low margin. EV’s create many barriers to entry for new competitors, automakers have much more pricing power - and government mandates force consumers to buy higher-margin cars
Moreover, government saying they will invest in charging stations is a free gift to automakers to further this move.
Not to mention the raw materials for all the components for the vehicles themselves. They don’t magically appear. These assclowns really have NO clue.
I have a good friend of Swedish extraction. He loves self-deprecating remarks about Scandinavians. Such as, “What’s dumber than a dumb Norwegian? A smart Swede!”
Too bad the subsidies for wind and solar weren’t terminated. That would put an end to that fiasco.
Uninformed...
Norway gets 95% of it’s electricy from hydropower. 100% renewable and 100% theirs.
More petrol for me! Sunny side! LOL!
Gen IV nuclear is the way forward.
