CALAIS, France (Reuters) - Moments after Britain completed its divorce with the European Union, the first trucks hauling goods across the new customs border presented their clearance documents to French agents before loading onto a train to pass through the Eurotunnel.
A barcode on Romanian driver Toma Moise’s paperwork was scanned and approved in seconds. “The future, I don’t think it will be difficult,” he said in broken English before continuing his journey towards Britain.
Cast as the dawn of a newly independent “global Britain”, its exit from the world’s biggest trading block means the return of customs formalities on the island nation’s frontier with Europe for the first time in several decades.
Freight flows through the Eurotunnel’s Calais terminal were extremely light in the early hours of the New Year.
British and European businesses have warned of carnage at the border as they learn to navigate a wall of red tape and paperwork that threatens to disrupt the smooth flow of nearly 1 trillion euros in annual trade.
Yann Leriche, chief executive of Getlink which operates the Eurotunnel, told Reuters tweaks to customs procedures might be necessary but that there would be no chaos in the weeks ahead.

Wonder how long until it will be:

Maybe it will be a QR code. It will show your Covid vaccination is up-to-date, of course.
Can’t happen? I say it’s coming. Some version of it, anyways.
They keep claiming the EU was a “trading block” but it was an attempt at a one euro government and it failed.
It wouldn't fall in Texas, either.
Yep. Britain joined a Common Market and if it stayed one a lot of people like myself would not have had a problem with it.
But this “ever closer union” idea can only ever end with a loss of sovereignty.
It hadn’t happened yet - but it was going to. And that’s why it was time to get out before that happened.
And thank God it has happened.
Yes, there might be some pain to come. But it’s better than losing your nation.
I am sure many us remember all the dire predictions that would occur one nano second after midnight on January 1, 2000.
That’s a fact.
A theory well worth proving.
God Bless Texas!
congratulations UK for finally re-achieving a modicum of independence
The Peace of Westphalia (#1648) scores!
good. the gov’t “experts” proved wrong once again.
Exciting! We’re on the cusp of more prophecy!
And this was not about COVID...but Brexit.
Brexit happened 11 months ago. The UK officially left the EU on 31st January 2020. What ended in 31st December 2020 was the grace period when the uk still got the benefits of being a member, while NOT being a member.
Read the two page document starting the EU in 1957. It starts off calling for “ever closer union “.
The EU from the beginning was conceived as a political confederacy.
The UK didn’t want that so created the EFTA in the 50s with sweden etc. That trading only club didn’t give economic benefits so tye UK petitioned for 9 years up until 1973 to be added to the EU. France rejected ut twice.
The third time France relented as de Gaulle was gone and the British under heath promised to be good partners.
The UK then had a referendum in which people were clearly told ab6shared sovereignty. 67% voted to join.
