McConnell blocks vote on $2K checks, signals new package

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday blocked an attempt by Democrats to set up a stand-alone vote on increasing the amount of recently passed stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) both tried to get consent for the Senate to bring up legislation that passed the House in a 273-134 vote on Monday.

The GOP leader did not directly address why he objected, but under the Senate's rules any one senator can block efforts to set up votes or pass bills.

Exactly Chicago Conservative. It’s almost there is an intentional slam on FR any time Mitch supports the Presidents agenda AGAINST Mitch. It’s insane.

I completely understand how this level of society works. Heck, Epstein was at Mara Largo once...but that didn’t mean he and Trump shared any ideology whatsoever.

Proximity does not equate to level of endearment.

”[…] but under the Senate's rules any one senator can block efforts to set up votes or pass bills."

Constitutionally undefined Senate rules like 60 vote supermajority and one senator blocking votes or passing bills seem like politically correct, back door ways to nullify the express constitutional guarantee of one vote per senator imo.

"Article I, Section 3, Clause 1: The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof, (See Note 3) for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote [emphasis added]."

Insights welcome.

No...he said he was taking up ALL of the Presidents wishes to be debated....not just the $2000 item.

Except for all that pork that the President redlined and wants removed from the spending bill. Nothing on that I see.

I view there being a difference between a one-time or very infrequent proximity (i.e. you both showed up to the same big event) and having regular, frequent, small and intimate gatherings together.

I’m telling you, these people (McConnell, Pelosi, Biden, etc.) are personal friends. There are exceptions. Ted Cruz is not part of that group. But most are. They don’t even go out of their way to hide a lot of it. Look at Pelosi laughing and joking with everyone at Bob Dole’s 90th birthday party: https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/pelosi-remarks-senator-bob-doles-90th-birthday-celebration

And that’s the stuff they’ll put right out in public. In private, these people spend a lot of time together both in Washington and around the world. And I’m not talking about budget negotiations.

If McConnell attaches the $2000 bill to other things in the wish list it will kill the $2000 bill, which is what he wants.

There was a time when I supported McConnell, but if he effectively Kills the $2000 increase, he will be S-— on my list forever.

You misspelled Civil War.

We're getting closer and closer to it. The damage is done, but many don't understand. We're perhaps 3 months away from cataclysmic depression and civil unrest gaining full steam towards disaster late next year. Civil War can save some of our country, but much will be wrecked.

“If McConnell attaches the $2000 bill to other things in the wish list it will kill the $2000 bill, which is what he wants.”

A little more complicated than that.

Enough Dem and R Senators want the 2 grand checks to pass it.
So, he’s asking R Senators to go along with 230 and election things: probably just assigned “blue ribbon” committees (will they have subpoena power and adequate budgets? ... we’ll see LOL!)

The key to that is the R Senators up for election in 2022 who are afraid of Trump voters.
Mitch is giving them a chance to protect themselves from Trump voters- AND send the big checks.

That’s the most I can imagine the tech-owned, election-cheating RINOs and Dems that run the place would agree to.

Yeah, but the Kentucky voting machines were set to see that Mitch won another term, so he figures that people will forget all this before 2026.

McConnell signaled separately that he could package the increase in direct stimulus checks, with a repeal of a tech shield that has emerged as a top target for Trump and election-related investigations.

Why does McConnell need legislation for election-related investigations? Is he still not the majority leader? Don't Republicans chair every committee in the Senate? Can't they start investigations on their say-so alone, call witnesses, subpoena information? Then do it. Today. This afternoon. All adding it to legislation does is ensure that any such investigations are delayed or killed altogether. Why?
