WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans shot down a Democratic bid on Thursday to pass President Donald Trump's longshot, end-of-session demand for $2,000 direct payments to most Americans before signing a long-overdue COVID-19 relief bill.
The made-for-TV clash came as the Democratic-controlled chamber convened for a pro forma session scheduled in anticipation of a smooth Washington landing for the massive, year-end legislative package, which folds together a $1.4 trillion governmentwide spending with the hard-fought COVID-19 package and dozens of unrelated but bipartisan bills.
Thursday's unusual 12-minute House session session instead morphed into unconvincing theater in response to Trump's veto musings about the package, which was negotiated by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Trump's behalf. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, sought the unanimous approval of all House members to pass the bill, but GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who was not present in the nearly-empty chamber, denied his approval and the effort fizzled.

oh well then I give Mccarthy a pass.
Just changing the number and not getting rid of the pork is not good enough.
Stand alone bill
That is all she needs to do.
Enough of you. You’ll be gone as soon as I make moves.
Merry Christmas.

It’s called a “moral hazard” to just give money away to regular Americans. For some economic reason though, giving it to foreign countries like Pakistan and Ukraine and Egypt, and favored industries, and 40 million for the Lincoln Center is fine. Oh and giving a triple payment to illegal aliens is fine also.
Why don’t they do a clean bill that is one page? Oh right, because they don’t want to actually do it.
I am not sure if McCarthy back stabbed the president. According to reports, the president’s own people were part of the negotiations. In the end, everyone, including the President, agreed to the compromise or it would never have gone through the Congress.
Most conservatives don’t have a problem giving money to small business to keep them a float but to give piles of money to everyone, including those working, is just wrong.
I think what McCarthy did was represent most fiscal conservatives and, if anything, it is Trump who is not playing from the book he originally went along with.
This was the pork laden package, but with the payments increased to $2000.
My Rep, Tim Burchett voted against this Porkulus Bill.
Good for him.
Mccarthy did the right thing. Nancy didn’t want to touch the giant pork fiasco. Trump wanted it stripped, too. The $2000 was incentive, butnowhere near his only demand.
Freepers immediately trashing McCarthy sound like dems. Stop with the propaganda. Take a breath, stop wringing your hands.
“Despite Trump’s demand”
Non sequitur.
The President does not “DEMAND” things from the House of Representatives.
The bigger picture is that we should not be giving money to any foreign country. Giving money to Pakistan for "gender studies"?????
2/3 of the relief bill goes overseas to foreigners, and has nothing at all to do with Covid. How can these representatives and senators look themselves in the mirror? They are utterly without shame. They have failed the American people beyond anyone's imagination.
“We will make them pay for this . McCarthy has made a major blunder here. “
Bullshiite. He did the right thing. Ball back in Pepsi’s court.
Is he possibly objecting to all the other junk in the bill?
The backstabbing has been official for some time, but not on this account.
Trump had two demands. One was $2,000 per, the other was strip the pork.
Pelosi wanted to just up the $600 to $2,000 and leave the pork. McCarthy said no.
Trump: $2000 checks and no pork
Pelosi: $2000 checks and pork
McCarthy says no to Pelosi’s unanimous consent plan
Situation: Original deal still faces a potential Trump veto.
I believe Trump did this to delay the bill until his team reads the entire bill (funding bill and covid relief bill). One can’t read 5000 pages in only a few hours.
“And I think most here will agree that Kevin Mccarthy is a backstabber in the vein of Paul Ryan”
Bullshiite. Mccarthy is 100x better than Ryan. I support him in this. Speak for yourself.
Actually, it was Pelosi who objected to cutting other items from the bill. This thread is not an accurate representation of what happened.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
“I see this as a good move by McCarthy...”
+100
alrighty then.....I guess we will wait to see if YOUR Mccarthy objects when it comes time to decide who is President.
