Claims by China that that it "expelled" the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain from disputed South China Seawaters are untrue, the U.S. Navy said.
"On Dec. 22, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law," a statement Tuesday by the Navy's 7th Fleet began.
"This freedom of navigation operation ... upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea recognized in international law by challenging restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan.
"All interactions with foreign military forces were consistent with international norms and did not impact the operation."
The Chinese statement came after the ship passed near the archipelago of small islands, reefs and atolls in the South China Sea, an area claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. China has installed an airstrip and several buildings on the site.

I’m surprised they didn’t hit anything.
“Did not.”
“Did too.”
(repeat as needed).
Lol. Commie theatrics. PR is all they have. All they did was have a couple of vessels carefully follow the McCain out of the region. Safely to the rear. Now they do their usual posturing.
If Biden becomes president they won’t have to complain about us operating there anymore. China will be free to dominate the region.
the navy wasn’t expelled from the SCS any more than I was expelled from the McDonald’s drive thru after I got my big mac.
Can you trust what the navy says?
Seems a fair question, now days.
no, it seems like an idiotic question. but there are a lot of those on FR “now days”.
It’s the McCain, so it probably ran...
The number of people and organizations I trust without questioning has gotten is rather small since November. You evidently don’t need to question some government departments. I would suggest you look up the West Point cheating story from a couple of days ago.
In a choice between the us navy and the plan, I’m going with our navy every time.
especially when the plan story is obviously overheated propaganda.
enjoy trying to explain your weirdness away. Jesus. What a mess.
I didn’t say trust the plan. I questioned your blind faith in the Navy being honest. The fact that they are somewhat more honest than the plan is not that encouraging. Do you really want to define anyone who questions the trust level about a government department as weird?
done with you.
