Woman rises from poverty and homelessness to become a sergeant with the LAPD

It is not often that Law Enforcement Today is able to bring heartwarming news about police officers.

After all, in this day and age, the material is well-hidden. However, there are stories out there, such as the woman who had been homeless since she was twelve, picked herself up, and made a career for herself as a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Letisia Ruiz, the daughter of Mexican Immigrants, was one of twelve children who grew up near the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters. She never mentioned why she decided to run away at a young age, but she did at 12 years old.

Ruiz said:

“I ran away from home at a very young age. I was 12 when I ran away. (I) didn’t return back home, but I kept a good relationship with my parents.”

Her difficulties grew as she became pregnant at 15 years of age. Ruiz decided to quit middle school and to figure out where she wanted her life to go. It would turn out, it seems, that becoming a single mother may well have saved her life.

Ruiz was able to find a home that was designed for single mothers, termed as a “transitional home.” It was in that home that Ruiz decided she needed to get her diploma if she was to make anything out of her life.

She said that it was in her senior year of high school that she first became interested in law enforcement as a career. She had some type of negative experience, which she did not elaborate on, that somehow made her interested in becoming a police officer. She said:

“In my senior year, I had a bad experience with law enforcement and that enlightened me into a career with law enforcement.”

Remarkably, Ruiz was able to pull everything together and graduate. She not only graduated with her diploma, but she did so with honors.

Ruiz decided she needed to obtain her college degree and was able to get into California State University – Los Angeles campus. It was in college that she decided to pursue her path in law enforcement and applied to the Los Angeles Police Department.

In 2005, the Los Angeles Police Department hired her. She made her way through the training program and off of probation. Ruiz found herself patrolling the same neighborhood where she grew up and helped her mother sell tamales.

When Ruiz thinks back to where she started compared to what she achieved, she said:

“It was difficult. I was part of the system, the welfare system, the Section 8 system, and I utilized it to my advantage to provide a better life and future for my child at the time.”

Ruiz has shared her story so that others in difficult situations can have the inspiration and hope to achieve more. Ruiz said:

“It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are, you just have to have the drive and desire to get to where you want to be.”

Ruiz moved on from that homeless little girl years ago and has been promoted to sergeant.

Spread the word! Make people successful, no matter WHAT their circumstance, and make Socialist Democrats cry!

Win/Win!

Good for her. Wonder if she still votes for Socialist Democrats, though. :(
